Just bought a dust collector from Grizzly - the polar bear series with the canister filter.

We're using it to clean the sawdust out of our attic - it's full of wood chips. I've made a rudimentary cyclone lid for a trash can, and it's working pretty well...

The issue is that when I use the paddle to clean the filter, it spews fine dust visibly into the air through the filter - it's counterintuitive for this to be happening...any idea if this is normal?

I have a modified Delta DC with an aftermarket Wynn filter (rated to 1 micron), It does not have a paddle but to clean it I beat it from the outside with a padded jointer push block and the caked dust in the pleats falls to the plastic bottom bag but nothing comes out as fine dust. As a matter of fact I once tried blowing compressed air to the outside of the pleated filter and it had no effect...so I figure the fabric is pretty tight. I believe that the Grizzly canister is also rated to 1 micron...are you using the paddle to clean the filter while it is running of with the DC off?

Not normal for a fine filter. Very normal for a coarse filter. The materials you are seeing are the bigger particles that should not be going out.

There is a tendency to "over maintain" the top filters. You should avoid disturbing the "cake" buildup until the loss of air flow is apparent.

I just bought this and used it for the first time on my full attic - but it's supposed to be a 1 micron filter...

I believe I read somewhere when i was researching pleated filters that in order for some of them to reach "full efficiency" it had to be used for a while in order to build up the "dust cake" and that once it was caked enough it would filter to the specified micron level. I understood that as "it has to clog first before it can filter properly" so I skipped that one and kept looking.

Obviously, make sure you are wearing the proper respiratory protection regardless of the micron rating of your filter. That being said, I have a 1 micron filter on a JDS DC with the internal wiper and have not ever seen any fines being emitted when I clean the pleats.
