Good Afternoon All,

I am looking at the JET 708660 DC-500 Dust Collector for my garage, I am new to this hobby and am on a budget. Can anyone give me their opinion on this system.

Thanks,

Kicker

If you are planning on using it on just one machine it MIGHT be ok for you. At 500cfm it's on the low end. More importantly it has a 30 micron bag. Preferably you look for a 1 micron or better to really catch the fine stuff which is what causes the most damage to our lungs!
I ended up getting this one http://www.amazon.com/DELTA-50-760-1-5HP-Vertical-Collector/dp/B00078V9KA
and have been very pleased. I know it's more money but it at least gives you something to compare others to.
Good Luck whatever you decide!

I agree with Lenny. A shop vac with a HEPA filter would do just as good a job as this.

You really need to get a good air filter/dust collector. If you can't get it now due to $$$ concerns, use a shop vac with a HEPA filter bag, wear a good mask and save your money until you can get a good one.

Just remember ... It is your health that you are protecting. A superior method of fine dust collection will surely pay off in the months ahead. Look at the CFM the unit in question will move and consider getting a much higher air movement right at the source of the dust. Consider also upgrading to a canister filter that will get 0.5 microns or better. The smaller dust gets deeper into the lungs and in time causes all the problems.

Check out Wynn.com and see if they make a replacement filter for whatever unit you get. Use the following Google search results for Wynn and wander around the various places for information.

Also, you can read up on the Thien Baffle that many here have installed to help prevent filter clogging. http://www.cgallery.com/jpthien/cy.htm Very simple design and VERY helpful. Best of all very inexpensive. I have the device on all my dust collection units ... man, what a difference it makes in keeping my filters clean.

Bill Pentz has done extensive work on designing a cyclone vacuum system that is phenomenol in use. Go here and read EVERYTHING ... http://billpentz.com//woodworking/cyclone/index.cfm

Spend the money and get a great dust collection system OR be prepared to spend far more at the doctor's office. Safety is definitely first when it comes to working with fine particulate material. You don't have to go overboard, but definitely be better than just getting by. Hey, your family wants you around and in good health and if they work around the shop with you, they too deserve protection.

I used to have the Delta version of this DC. It was somewhat underpowered and was TRULY a one machine unit. Having said that, I used it alot. I now have a bigger Delta at 1200 cfm and have just ordered the Thein canister. It is much more efficient and a huge improvement. I did not ever notice dust in the air from the 30 micron bag, but I have had a Jet air cleaner for a long time. I would tend to agree with the other guys, it really was not much if any better than a shop vac.

I am learning a lot from this forum. I'm making a list to get started in penturning and part of that list had a low cost dust collector. Of course it was 35 microns. Penn State has one for $259.99, 1.5 HP and 1 Micron. 1250 CFM, is this a good one for a pen turning shop?

I bought a used Jet 1100dc with the canister filter and had only had a quarter bag of dust put through it (still had original bag on it) for 275 so used may be a way to go also.

Thanks for all of your input, my wife ordered me the one that Lenny sugguested tonight.

Blessings,

Fred has it all tied down. I spent over a year finding all the sites he posted. I have used the info there and found it very good. I moded an HF dc with the Winn filter and added the seperator in front of that. Very little big stuff gets into the bag. I also built a fine dust collector from an old window ac unit using the 3m Filtret pollen filter. this also helps a lot. If you can't go the big bucks for a real cyclone now, a good shop vac with hepa filter moved from one machine to another will get you by. Save up and get something that will do the job the first time. Money well spent and health saved.
