Dust collection for a Paul Huffman vise!

As some of you know, I am a big proponent of GOOD dust collection. I invested in a good quality cyclone dust collection system 2 years ago when my dad was diagnosed with nasopharyngeal cancer most likely caused by exposure to plywood sawdust as a carpenter, according to his cancer Drs. and MD Anderson.

As a result, I sometimes get obsessed with dust collection! Here is a DC "hood" I came up with for drilling pen blanks on my Paul Huffman vise. It works FLAWLESSLY and not one tiny little flake escapes!

That is one friggin sweet little DC you got there sir. You got all the nice toys!

On a side note , will there be more videos from turntex?????
 
Very sweet. I like your dust collection. I think that you are very smart to collect all the dust that you can. I also value my lungs and don't like any dust being kicked around my work area.
 
Curtis.. Wickedly cool (and the video is too).... For alot of my drilling, I attach the 4" hose near the back of what I'm drilling leading to the DC, but this does a MUCH better job than just the hose! Wow... Good ideas.
 
I have scrap pieces or wood, bushings and tubes sitting on my DP table, so I don't think that would work LOL. But it is a fantastic idea and i am very glad it works for you.

That is very nice, but I can not imagine hiding such a beautiful vise from the world . . .

Perhaps a large photograph of one of Paul's vises attached to the side would be in order . . .

Nice job with that hood Curtis. You also managed to catch a very good demo of drilling a blank. very nice touch using clear plastic, it really shows the details of pecking and all.
I will have to go quite a bit larger to surround my vice but am sure I can get the same effect. The drill press is still one of the tools I get a lot of dust collecting around. I have the lathe and band saw pretty well under control. Not sure what I will do about the radial arm saw. i located it to close to the wall so i have to get massive creative on that one.
 
Wow Curtis, that's another great idea. I've been using one of those 2 1/2" hoses that will hold their shape. Not nearly as effective.

One just can't protect one's health in wood working arenas without adequate fine particle dust collection. Collecting the dust at the source is the most efficient method of keeping your shop clean and also goes a long way in protecting your health AND prolonging your life.

Way to go Curtis ...

I honestly hope folks here take your lead and improve their dust collecting capabilities at each station in their shops that produces ANY dust. :biggrin::biggrin:

Remember folks, it ain't the large stuff in the air that we breath that causes health problems ... it is instead the fine, floating dust particles that get deep into the lungs that kill us over a period of time. AN example ... when was the last time you inhaled a large shaving? Most of us just don't have snouts that would take a large shaving!!! :eek:
