I've never made any calls and don't have any real knowledge about making them.
However, I have a good friend who is a pretty avid duck and turkey hunter.
I'd like to surprise him with a nice call.
What's gotta be my minimum investment? What are the MUST have tools?

Thanks.

Gary,
If you have all the tools to turn pens, you're set there... all you will need are the kits and bushings... When I was turning calls, I drilled with a spade drill, used the rubber compression bushings that slide over the mandrel and my regular tools.

For the turkey calls, will depend on whether you do boxes or turkey pots...don't know anything about making the boxes.... I did the pots and the only thing you'll need for them is the slate and the glass sound boards..

I ordered from these guys: Custom Sawing - Turkey Call Parts and Supplies
Pretty reasonable prices and good quality parts.

No investment needed really for duck calls.

If you purchase 1 5/8" expanding arbor I think ok you'll find it worthwhile though.

All you have to do is bore a 5/8" hole and turn whatever profile shape you like.

If you want to make your own insert it will be a bit more technique to learn.

Thanks for the info. Dan's other post on inserts is also useful for a good source. Where do you get your expanding arbors?

I bought one off eBay from a machine shop in New Hampshire. Good quality.

There is a guy who sells longer ones provided by that some company but they are around $40. More than I wanted to spend for the amount id use.

Csusa sells a version as well.

Hopefully you already have a collet chuck.
