I was thinking has anyone used a dry silicone spray on their bushings to keep ca from sticking? I was going to try but thought I'd ask before I did because of concerns that it might contaminate the ca finish. Another thought are these dry lubricants that are used for lathe beds and tablesaw tops?

Generally speaking, you don't want silicone around your woods before you apply a finish. It can severely affect the ability of the wood to take a finish. And, it has a way of migrating from the application point. Many woodworkers won't keep it in their shop.

Not just woodworkers but anyone that tries to do a decent job of laying on a finish of any kind. That stuff is really nasty. It moves exactly where you do not want it and the finish will find it. YUCK!

Wax is bad enough, Silicone spray is evil!:eek:

Usually woodworkers avoid any silicone in the shop like the plague. Reason is, it causes "fisheyes" in finishes. And you may just try to get it on the bushings, but it spreads to your hands and the work and all over. So yeah, it'd prevent the CA from sticking to the bushings, but also to she pen...

Edit: looks like I'm late in commenting. Should've read all of the responses first!

I use Renaissance Wax for both actually. bottom of all my planes, draw knives and on finished pens.

Yeah just like I thought, I guess I'll stick with the wax. I was just trying to think of a quicker way to coat the bushings. I assume all the dry lubricant sprays contain silicone.

No need to use bushings if you get these from Johnny, they are fantastic for finishing.

I have a set of those I use for my bigger pens, but I find I don't have very good luck using them with the smaller tube pens (must be me), I get better results using bushings with those. I tried cutting a length of 7 mm Teflon tube to pieces the same length of the bushings, it seemed like it would work but it's extremely hard to cut the tube square and parallel because the tube has a curl to it. I'll keep experimenting!

After squaring a drop of thin CA and then candle wax seals the ends and there has not been one issue yet. This, of course, is after loosing a couple good blanks on a mandrel.
