dropped my tail stock

actually knocked it off the bench my lathe is on. a jet 1014VS
there is a dig right next to the MT socket opening, point of impact i am guessing, and the hand wheel is real hard to turn. the MT itself seems to be ok, live centers go in and seat correctly and the hand wheel will retract (with difficulty)and eject the center ok.
I took out the piece with the MT socket(quill?) in it, no problem, and the hand wheel is still hard to turn with it out, so i suspect the jolt was transferred down into some other part. i had to leave and couldn't do any further disassembly. i see a set screw in the collar around the base of the hand wheel where it goes into the tail stock casing.
what am i going to find when i back out that set screw? i have never disassembled a lathe before, still new to this. new enough to drop a tail stock !!
i cant even figure out how the piece with the MT in it (quill?)engages whatever else in in there so it goes in and out as you turn the hand wheel. the quill comes right out when i back off the locking lever, there is a key way in the quill. it looks ok, but no engagement between the quill and whatever is inside between it and the hand wheel.
Any ideas what else could have been damaged? what could be causing the hand wheel to bind? did i explain this clearly enough?

Did you get a diagram with the lathe that shows the internal parts, etc for ordering?

Sulli, looks like you may have bent the lead screw, should be easy enough to fix. remove the handwheel and screw all the way out. place it on your work bench and rotate it to see where the bend is. After finding the bend, place it on a piece of scrape wood with the bend up and hit it with a soft face malet to straighten it. after it is straight, it should work just fine. Robbie

Just guessing here, but if the hands heel is hard to turn even with the quill out, I don't think it's the lead screw (might be wrong).

My guess is that you simply knocked the hand wheel closer to the tail's body (the cast iron chunk). Is there space between the handwheel and the body? If not, just losses that set screw, move the handwheel a bit back, and re-tighten.

Seriously, what likely happened is that it jammed the hand screw. Take an allen wrench, remove the handwheel and reseat it (You'll know where it likes to live by the indents from the previous setting).

Jets are HARDER to KILL than Armidillos! DAMHIKT

The lead screw wasn't bent. It seems it got slightly cocked in the opening out the back of the tail stock from the impact. There is a score mark around the lead screw where it comes out of the tail stock. Just taking it apart and reaasembling it took care of it!! I did rub a little fine sandpaper around the score mark and inside the opening where it goes thru the casing, didn't find any burs. Cleaned wit WD40 and a drop of oil at the scoremark.

When I looked over the edge of the bench when it happened I thought I'd see it in pieces on the floor, it's cast iron, right?

I'm left with a nick in the quill(ram?) right at the edge of the MT opening, but it all works fine!
