I found out that a lathe chuck don't fair well in a drop test. I was going to replace my chuck insert to one I can lock to my lathe but the insert that was on it was stuck so I took it out to my shop to try and get it out which I did. I tripped walking back to the house and the chuck went flying I'm not sure how high but when it hit it took a small chunk out of it and really messed up the chunk to tge point I can't use it. The jaws are really tight and I can't move them. When I put in on the lathe it has a real bad vibration. I think for the time being I'll get a PSI pen chuck to do my drilling and look at getting another chuck later on. On a positive note only the chuck got hurt our grandkids were playing in the area at the time and I'm ok too.

First step ... fix walkway to avoid the tripping problem...

Thankfully nobody was badly hurt.

I take it that the damage to the chuck would be considered "user abuse" instead of "normal wear and tear" for the purposes of warranty redemption? :P

Dan, Bummer!
What brand chuck was this? Tommy bars or turn key?
Also, have you removed the jaws to determine if the chuck body is okay or if the damage is to the the gearing?
Some chucks, you can turn the slides all the way out of the chuck body.

The chuck can and will be replaced..I'm thankful no one got hurt. Charlie the chuck body is damaged I can't even get the key in the hole were the damage is, one of the jaws is pushed in even with the body the others are above the body. The vibration is what bothers me because it's very bad.

Nope, chuck the jaws too. You don't want anything spinning at high speed that is not in top notch condition.

No shot put either....your shoulder is not 20 years old anymore.

I think I can speak for, well I can only speak for myself. But thanks for your sacrifice and the information that you cannot take a chuck and throw it when you fall and expect it to survive. This information I am sure will be valued by all.

Seriously, I am glad you are ok and sorry about the chuck, they are expensive.
Curt
