i just started drilling on my lathe and i'm thinking of buying one of these and was wondering if anyone has experience using one on blanks that are out of square or cast blanks or a hunk of deer antler . i can imagine they are a dream on store bought square blanks but not sure on the others

I have one of these and absolutely love it. Yes it is designed for square blanks, but I have no issues drilling out round blanks on it as well. The clamps don't seem to mind at all. I will usually try and square up any blanks that need it on my table saw to clean make it easier. Antler, I will turn between centers to round out and then clamp into my drilling chuck to drill. Hope this helps.

that really helps thank you. i especially like the idea of turning antler round b.c. that will make drilling so much easier any way you drill. did i mention i love this place.

crap. i just checked out on the pen site i was on. oh well i guess i'll be making another purchase later.
thanks again

Drilling methods and purposes are many faceted. For segmented and delicate blanks, I use the lathe and have for 4 - 5 years.

Still, there is another part to controlling the entrance and exit points (as on curved antlers) and it can be seen here:

Worth while investment. Though I am taking a break from pen making till my inventory sells down, that baby gets lots of use in my corn cob pipe modification work.

order came in today. not too shabby. i placed my order tuesday night. advantage to shopping local. i think i might be turning tonight. not sure on the rules for advertizing a supplier so if anyone is looking for a great supplier in canada. let me know.
