I got a couple of gift cards to Lowes...

I have been interested in the drill doctor and have read the posts here about the product...

They have the model Model: DDXPK ....

Is this a decent model?

Marc,
Have you looked at DrillDoctordotcom and compared the models? I have the DD750X as it does up to 3/4" bits. I do not see the model that you mentioned listed but I only took a quick gander.

I bought an XP years ago and quickly replaced it with the DD750. The XP is a decent model if you don't want to sharpen bits larger than 1/2". The older models made you buy an adapter to sharpen bits larger than 1/2" and it was cumbersome to use and not that accurate in my opinion, I don't know about the newer ones but would bet they haven't changed.

I would hold out for the larger capacity 750 myself and use the gift cards for something else.

Shop around, I'll bet you can find a dd750 online almost as cheap as Lowes sells the XP for.

I originally bought a smaller version. Eventually replaced it. You can sharpen small bits on the 750, you can't sharpen larger (over 1/2") with the small model. Buy the 750, you won't be disappointed.

We got the 750 and are very happy with it. The ability to vary the angle from 115 to 135 is great. Also the split point feature is great too. If you can use your gift cards for something that you would have bought anyway and use that money to buy from a different source, then watch Amazon for a deal. Ours was $99.99 and the best price we have seen so far.

I've had a XPK for more than a year. It works just fine. Mine came with the large collet that will take up to 3/4 inch bits (I think the large collet was a promo for a while.) Whichever model you get, make sure it will do split point grinds on twist drill bits. That's especially important for bits that are used to drill pen and larger project blanks such as those used for perfume bottles and key ring fobs. The split point grind helps minimize bit wander in the hole.

I have the 500 model for small bits. I learned how to sharpen drill bits by hand MANY years ago and anything over 1/4" I do by hand. Just habit.

OK... bought it... used it...

Wow!!

Very nice indeed.... so easy and simple and quick!

If it doesn't fall apart, this is gonna go down as a good purchase for sure...

The grind looks kinda rough... I can see lots of grinding marks, but the proof is in the pudding, and I went out and drilled end grain (a la pen blanks) in some Osage Orange... went through it like the proverbial hot knife through butter!

Thanks all... when I get some more time I will try the split point function...
