Been reading a lot of raves about the Drill Doctor lately and have about decided to put it on my "next to purchase tool" list. Have to wait until Feb as I have already spent my Jan tool budget :(

Which model do I need to be considering? Looks like the DD750X might be the one, but wanted to check with those in the know first.

Thanks for any advice you can offer.

Bob, I have used the 500 only and I have to tell you it is not hype. They are the most amazing tool! I had to stop at a shop to visit a friend to sharpen those large bits I bought last week and they are like a razor now.. I really do not think you can go wrong. What you DO want to make sure is that it comes with the chuck to go from 1/2" to 5/8" so you can sharpen the larger bits that some of the kits use.

I really have to get one myself someday! When you get it, just go thru and sharpen all your bits, you will see how bad the original grind was...[;)]

For the few bucks extra, go with the 750. As you turn more kits, you will appreciate being able to sharpen the larger bits...you know, the EXPENSIVE TO REPLACE ones!

Thanks so much for the encouragement on this wish list item everyone. It looks like it will be a go just as quick as I refresh my tool budget at the 1st of Feb.

Special thanks to you Russ for reminding me of the 15% rebate. I just got my Wood mag in the mail the other day and remember seeing the rebate, but forgot all about it.

Not only is there a 15% off coupon, at the drill doctor site if you order from them you can buy a replacement course and regular wheel for $10 a piece. This is about 40% off the regular price for the wheels.

Not to shaby. I just placed an order for the 750, two wheels and I think the shipping was only a 4-6 dollars as well.

Scott

The 750x is $119.95 the two wheels are $10 bucks each, then you get a $15 rebate and shipping (for me,at least) is $6.95.... I just ordered one. My boss has a 500, and it works great.

Okay..... I am convinced that this tool is a must have in my shop and I have received a gracious offer from the budget department (LOML) to receive an advance against next month's budget to make the purchase now if need be.

I have found this little gem on Amazon for $119 and free shipping. I will qualify for the 15% rebate which would bring my cost down to $101 net. Is this a good deal or can I do better by waiting? Not being versed on what this machine sells for regularly, I need some advice.

How long do the sharpening wheels last as a general rule?

Thanks

I have had my DD500 for several years and it is an absolute MUST in my shop. Yes, at times, I wish I could sharpen larger than 1/2". Do take advantage of the sales and get the biggest you can afford.

Frank, I think you can order the adapter for the 500 to allow it to do the larger bits. It then works the same as the 750, it just costs more to purchase the two parts as an upgrade than if you bought the 750 to begin with.

Actualy, if you want the cheap extra wheels, go to the home page for DD. Amazon wants $25+ bucks each for them.

IIRC, the DD web site says they will last for about 200 sharpenings; but it depends on whether you are doing big bits or little ones. Other thing is you can remove the wheel and reverse it to get extra use. Idon't know if the DD estimate of 200 sharpenings includes the reversing prodedure?

Ebay may be the route I have to go as I cannot find these $10 wheels on the DD site as has been previously mentioned.

Thanks again, Randy.

I bought it here:

http://www.drilldoctorstore.us/drilldoctor2.html

Just add it to your cart, then it will offer the two wheels. Be sure to download and print the rebate sheet.

ALRIGHT.....

I just pulled the trigger on the 750X and 2 extra sharpening wheels (thanks toolcrazy for the link). Total deal after rebate came to $132 including shipping [:)]

Now I can join the ranks of the sharp drill bit club [8D]

I got mine specifically for the 1/2" carbide drills I use on my rings. At $70 a pop, they got pretty expensive when they wore down. Now I resharpen them dozens of times. They get shorter and shorter, but are still long enough to drill the rings. The Drill Doctor has paid for itself many times over.

Hey Bruce: Do the carbide bits take a greater toll on the grinding wheels?

I guess they should take a toll, but I haven't seen it yet. They must use diamonds electroplated onto a metal wheel. Still grinding well after a couple years use.
