The question I have is what type double back tape would you use to attach a project to a specialized mandrel such as the one for purse hangers? I am concerned that since carpet tape is supposed to be permanent that it would be very difficult to remove. The project is about 1.5 inches in diameter and about .75 inch thick to start with. Open to any and all suggestions.

I always use carpet tape. The stuff they sell in Home depot carpet dept. for outdoor use. I do not want anything flying off the lathe when turning. You are adding stress to that connection when applying tools.

The key is after the project is done take it off. The longer you leave the piece adhered the more tack it gets and is tougher to take off. you will notice this with painters tape too. The longer you let it set it will stick very well.

This is my opinion:smile:

Leland,

The use you are planning can be held with either double sided tape or hot melt glue. I consider the piece size as being small. That said, at high speed, small items hurt.

I tend to use turners tape, but for smaller items carpet tape works.

With tape, the blank needs to be pressed to the mandrel or waste block with pressure such as a hand clamp for several minutes. Hot melt glue needs to cool.

Tricks are with the removal. Tape responds well to slow steady pressure from a sharp putty knife. Jerks and sharp forces tend to break or chip turnings. For hot melt glue, mineral spirits and a couple minutes will weaken/break the glue lose.

Mineral spirits cleans up the glue residue from double stick tape.

E6000 glue is good for mounting the turning.

I use the double stick tape from Woodcraft.
It works very well for pendants too.
A turner friend uses it to turn platters!

Remember to take light cuts.

I use turners tape for platters up to 12 inches attached to a faceplate with only the turners tape. I bought it from Rockler several years ago when it was on sale.

How your grab your piece to remove it from the tape is important so you don't break it.

I have a roll of turners tape I bought from Woodcraft and am very happy with it. I have also used the red backed double sided tape from Home Depot. Both work equally well ... until you get a catch. I turn purse holders, key keepers, and pendants. I turn the pendants on a Ruth Niles offset jig. I have a golf ball over the cup center on my live center so it doesn't scratch the wood. I keep the tailstock up with the golf ball in place while I turn everything but the face of the piece I'm turning. When I pull the tailstock back, I slow the speed down. I also have the mandrel or jig secured through the headstock so it doesn't come off once I remove the tailstock pressure.

I make lots of these. I use double stick tape and to remove it I use a shop knife and gently slice down, making sure the lathe will not move and my other hand is well out of the way.
