I just made two of these sets after requests from last weekend's show. I like it.

I bought a dozen or so Spectraply pen blanks, but so far all but two I have tried blew apart when using a Whiteside barrel trimmer (I made sure trimmer blades were sharp). One also blew apart when turning with a negative rake carbide radius. The two I was able to turn successfully turned out spectacular. I want to turn more of them, but so far, I've had like 5 or 6 that were completely destroyed when they blew apart and I feel like I'm throwing money away. Any tips or tricks on avoiding a blow out on these blanks?

Move ASAP to a barrel sander apparatus from Rick Herrell. It involves a disc sander that I applied Velcro for easy changes. I NEVER blow up blanks getting ready to turn. I also use a finer grit after CA application to reflush the end. Good luck
