Does Size Matter

I know you looked just because of the title, but I am curious about something. I was looking at buying the wolverine sharpening system. I have a 6" grinder and I am wondering if it is compatible, or do I need a 8" grinder? Is there a difference on one being better than the other?

6'' will work but 8'' is what I have. Less curve on the bevel. I guess I am one of the lucky ones. Had an 8'' grinder before I started down the turning road.

I use a 6" with my wolverine and it is fine. I do get a little bit more of a curve on the bevels of my skews.

I have a wolverine sharpening jig that I use on a 6 inch delta grinder.I had to make a spacer out of wood to go between the grinder and the workbench for the proper height.The instructions give you all of the needed measurements.

The deeper the bevel = more metal being removed from the tool. Use an 8" wheel to avoid excess removal. Of course just using a grinder also means more removal, but that is the nature of the beast.

IMHO, grinders are for course shape changes, whereas using a slow speed wheel is for sharpening. But, that is my opinion and I'm sticking with my dedicated Tormek. The grinder can have my lawnmower blades which do not require razor sharp edges and repeat angles ehich also makes sharpening less tedious.

But, you have to do what you decide.

Tormek would be nice, but I will never own one. Can't justify the price. Its just a thing with my brain. I like a tool that can do multiple jobs when possible (bang for my buck)and I already have a grinder and just put a finer stone on one end. And sharpening tools is a learned experience, as I have said in other threads. If you do not know how to sharpen your tools don't go out and buy the best tools that you can, they will wind up on the floor under your sharpening system, no matter what kind you have. Buy a cheaper set and practice sharpening, then add better tools.
