Hi all,
my Jet 1014 bearings sound like they're going out... I get a ticking noise when it runs.... I know the bearing numbers and the pricing from Jet.. but is it possible to buy off the shelf bearings that will fit and work in the Jet mini... Jet's pricing seems a little steep to me.

I know I can pull the bearings out and check sizes myself, just thought someone might already have the dims before I tear it down.

This article, http://content.penturners.org/articles/2008/replacingbearings.pdf, list them as #6004 and #6005. It doesn't give a brand or who made them. I did a search on "bearing 6004" and "bearing 6005" and found several hits.
Do a good turn daily!

Don Thanks... See I knew if I asked someone would have a good idea... I had searched for bearings, but didn't think to look for the specific number... I'll take a closer look at those tomorrow... I think I'll pull the old and check to make sure they are the same and save a few $$.

+1 for VBX. I bought bearings for my Grizzly band and plainer from them. Great service and even better prices. The bearings are the same as OEM and much less price.

before you tear it all the way down and replace the bearings, check your belt. A section hanging off a belt and smacking something internally can sound a lot like that too :-)

Mine bearing has been sounded like crap lately too, or at least it appears to be the bearing. I'm wondering if it might be covered under Jet's warranty, actually not even sure if the lathe is still under warranty.

Don't think mine is the belt I've already disassembled the whole headstock just shy of removing the actual bearings to clean things up. I still get noise and vibration which to me seems to be creating a little out of round on some turnings.

Which specific bearings on VXB.com would work for the Jet 1014? Searching 6004 and 6005 brought up a considerable amount, in types and price difference.

Get some motorkote spray and blast it in there. That'll fix it if the bearings haven't already worn themselves out, or extend it's life for a very long time. I just got 4 more cans of it in the spray form, big cans, 20% off and free shipping all this month.

You might try pulling the bearings and taking them to a local bearing supply house. They can match with no problem usually.

Larry, If your lathe is under 5 years old, I'm pretty sure the bearings are covered... I also have a 1442 that had some problems last year and after talking with the Jet Techs.. we decided it was bearings... they sent new bearings and authorized a repair man to put them in... wasn't sure I wanted to tear down the big lathe... my 1014 is about 8 years old so I know it's out of warranty.
The 1442 is giving me problems with the Reeves unit and again Jet has authorized a repairman to fix that for me... may have to replace the motor shaft as the keyway appears to be boogered up and won't let the motor pulleys slide back and forth... just waiting for the repairman to call and set up a meet so I can deliver to him... He's on the North side of Knoxville, but last time he met me in Alcoa about half way up.... at the price of gas I'll save a few miles.

Good idea, except I live outside a town of less than 800 people...and that's likely to include the surrounding area... probably closest place where there might be a bearing supply store is Knoxville... 50 miles away....

6004 & 6005 are standard sizes. There are more "numbers and letters" behind the numbers that designates the types of shields or seals and the lubricant enclosed in the race.

I recommend that you buy double sealed bearings with the Chevron grease (5C). Additionally, I would stick with Temkin, Fafner or NTN bearings as they are usually better quality.

Chuck,

I went through hell with my 1442 last year. Ended up unloading it in the end but I can point you in a direction to look at. All my problems started with the spindle shaft pulleys being replaced. After 5 sets of pulleys (both motor and spindle), 7 sets of bearings, a new spindle shaft, couple keys, 2 center bearing holders, and 6 months in the authorized repair center, they couldn't fix it. Jet ended up sending me a new head stock minus motor and it ended up having the same problem with vibration. It took some playing with, but I figured out the deal. The hole going through the pulleys (both motor and spindle) was not drilled at 90 degrees to the vertical, hence it was throwing everything off. Seriously, after putting it all back together and hitting the switch, it would eat the bearings in less than 30 seconds. I told Jet, but they could have cared less. They had hundreds of these in stock, and they just keep shipping them out, both in parts, and in the newly built lathes. I'm done with the reeves systems and WM Co. Their quality control is really lacking these days.

I do wish you luck with yours, and I'll keep my fingers crossed for ya.
