I went and saw Ted a couple weeks ago, got free tickets from a radio station. I started thinking about how I used to go all the time, okay at least once a month or so, and it dawned on me now I only go a couple times a year. And I actually hate going. I don't care if people laugh at the funny parts, cry at the sad parts, scream a little at the scary parts, but just because the person on the screen is making a call or getting one, doesn't mean you need to.

I don't care if it is the previews please SHUT UP! Sure ooh and ahh, and oh I want to see that is okay, but don't hold a conversation.

When I was younger and trying to get romantically inclined with the girl I brought (anotherwords trying to get some later that night), I could tolerate them babbling, but now I will move away from my wife if she starts that crap. As a matter of fact when we went to see Ted, a friend of ours went and they were babbling during the previews, I looked and told them they needed to shut up (with a few extra adjectives in there).

Which brings me to where are the ushers that used to be in there with the flashlights, to escourt idiots out? Bring back the ushers please, because people are idiots and do not have consideration for anyone else!

Basically why I don't go any more. People are rude nowadays. I will go see a good true story war movie though.

Last movie I went to was Towering Inferno. YES, it's been that long. Like you, I can't stand people talking, throwing popcorn, generally being ... idiots ( I cleaned that up ).

I go to the movies quite a lot and where I live there is none of the behavior that you have listed above. People turn off their phones, don't throw popcorn and 99% of the time don't talk.
There are no ushers but people are courteous and well behaved.

There used to be a movie theater close to my house. It had 3 screens, and a few ceiling tiles missing. The early movie was $3.00 (they moved up from $2.00) and late movie was $4.00. We went to that a lot. Now the person that sold concessions was the same one that took your ticket before you went to see the movie. A lot of kids went there, but I will be honest, they were better behaved than the theater that we would pay $8.00 a ticket for.

All we have out here is a bunch of idiots that talk to the screen. I got tired of that years ago and have not be a movie goer since. There is one theater out here that has recliners, beer, and you can get served dinner. That place eliminates the riff raff but it will cost you 20 bucks just to get in.

I do still go but probably only a couple times a year for me too. When my wife and I do go we will only go to an early showing, like 1:00 or earlier. There are always fewer people at those times. I can't even remember the last time we went to a movie in the evening. I don't think I could stand it to go when the place is packed, or even close to it. Used to go a lot and would have never considered going to one that early.

My wife and I go to the movies maybe 6 to 8 times a year. We go to a theater that is only $1 or $2 depending on the day of the week. The movies they show are a few months old and no longer showing in the regular price theaters. The theater is great with really comfortable seats and there are usually only about 20 - 30 people so you don't have all the problems you have in a full theater. It is the only theater we have been going to for the past 15 years (other than when we have received free passes for another theater).

Last movie I saw in a movie house was Butch Cassitidy and the Sundance Kid, first release. been living in the woods perhaps just long enough.

The simple answer is NO, not in a long time. If memory serves I have been to one in the past 30 years ... took my kids to see Tim Allen in 'The Santa Claus'

I remember when i was probably 5 or 6 yrs old, my grandpa ran the drive-in. My parents would drop me off, i would go in where he would be loading the film into the projector, then i would set in grandpa's car with the speaker hooked on the window, get some popcorn, soda, you dont relize how much ya miss those things til its gone. As far as going to movies now, maybe once a year, to expensive, wait til the movie comes out on cd, watch it in peace and be able to listen to what they are sayin from the couch.

A few days ago I went with my three Eldest Daughters to see Brave Wilma my Wife and I together with the girls really enjoyed the film.

It was a late morning show we were the only ones in the theatre, it was a pleasant change with no swearing on or off screen full of morality applicable to our girls who live in Utah, Perth 3000 kms away,Brisbane over 1200 kms away each one having given us many grey hairs etc.

Also meaningful was the use of the Scottish accent my family name being Hay and my Scottish ancestors stirr within me a great affection for their steadfast character emigrating to Australia in the 1800,s and America in the 1700,s and 1800,s.

Now you should know normally annimation, voice overs bring dread to me glad I overcame this to enjoy our company in a memorable visit that day. Quality time with the great goodwill we all felt.

Now these girls of ours are 56yrs, 54yrs,53 yrs of age having married so long ago all mums one a grandmum many times over we take our being together very seriously with so much
fun and laughter.

So yes we have been to the movies recently had a great time wish you would have as well.

Kind regards Peter.

These comments gave me a flashback. Back in the 80's my wife and I frequently went to a place called Cinema Lounge and Reel Peanut Bar in Moorhead, Minnesota. The theater showed second run movies for $1 and occasionally had comedians. Most of the seating was at tables but there were a couple of rows of chairs that just had a bar type of counter to set your food and drinks on.

The Reel (as in movie reel) Peanut Bar side had free peanuts and an atmosphere similar to a typical sports bar. They had a kitchen so you could order food in both the bar and theater. You could also shoot pool if you wanted. Both beer and mixed drinks were available by the pitcher.

It's been closed for many years. A married couple owned and operated it and the business closed when they divorced.

Wow, I hadn't thought of that place for years. Thanks for the memories.

Nothing compares to the old Drive In Movies. But then nobody ever went there to watch the movie.

We actually have a pretty good variety of theaters in our area. We still have a drive in nearby... We also have a place with tables in place of every other row of seats... plus you normal movies and budgets.

However, its downright EXPENSIVE these days. The price of popcorn and soda is NUTS on top of the ticket prices.

So we solved that problem - bought a projector... Now I can do 155" video at home - just like a theater but at MY schedule and prices

I go about half dozen times a year to catch the movies I really don't want to miss on the big screen. I don't know what theaters some of you folks are going to, but have not been experiencing the chatter, phone, or popcorn problems. I's a big movieplex with 22 theaters and stadium seating...I love it.

I remember the drive-ins in the 70's and 80's.. I recall my dad taking us kids to see "The song of the south". When I dated my old girlfriend we went to the theather to saw "Friday the 13th or Halloween" (can't remember which but they have the same scenieo) back in the 80's. Then I met my wife and we went to see "Silent Night, Deadly Night" (check it out)... I think the last recent movie was with the kids-Harry Potter's lastest.

The last movie Doris and I went to was a bit loud, OK, a LOT TO LOUD! I asked the manager to turn down the audio and was informed it was down. I told him if I were at work in that much noise, I would be required to wear hearing protection so turn it down to a more reasonable level or I would be forced to contact OSHA. I have a friend that works there. Believe it or not, after I refused my money back, the sound level was lowered to a more tolerable level. I know, I know, I'm an old fuddy duddy. My hearing is already bad enough, I will not endanger it further by being subjected to that level of sound, especially if I had to pay to be there. Oh, by the way, most movies we watch now are at home where we pop our own corn and pour our own beer.

When so many have larger screen TVs (and home theater sound systems) you don't feel as if you're missing anything from the true movie theater experience. I have found that if you really want to see something in the theater, but want to avoid the knuckleheads, then:

1. Never go on opening weekend.
2. The least attended shows are usually the 7 pm showings on Wednesday nights. I have watched some movies with as few as three in the theater!

We go a pretty good bit. We have a theatre here that is (usually) all adult, is by membership and serves alcohol as well as GOOD food. The popcorn is free and the theatre is super clean.

The movie equipment is state-of-the-art and while is open to all the membership, the seats are reserved (by first come, best choice of seats). It also has a cigar bar and Texas Hold'em on Monday nights.

The kids that come are well behaved because one screw up and the parents lose their movie tickets, for good. No cell phone or infants are allowed. It makes going to the movies fun again.

Me and the wife just started going again frequently 2X month maybe. They just built a new AMC near by and the seats are spacious and comfortable. The technology of the and imagery is outstanding. They have an IMAX and WOW I was a graphic artist and printer all my life and really appreciate the quality of the picture. Now I only go on morning week days (I have that luxury) prices not too bad $6.00 reg. show and $12.00 IMAX.
.

WE can not tolerate the language of most films now.... Can't even watch a good thriller here at home because of it. I remember when you could see a great action/thriller and not have the horrible talk..So we don't go...................

We talk about going pretty regular, usually just talk though... last movie we saw was Avatar and that's over a year ago... I personally would rather get the dvd and just stay home... the wife likes the experience of the movie theatre though... I worked in one about 50 years ago and remember how they were run and how much the concession items actually cost... it's tough for me to pay $3 to $17 for a bucket of popcorn and $3 to $5 for a cola drink when I know that the popcorn cost about $0.30 to make and the cola was about $0.15.... besides I'm not all that fond of popcorn.

My wife and I try to go every chance we can, that usually means on Mondays at 10 am (senior citizen discount) or on Saturdays and take in the early show. This has cut down on all the babbling and cell phone use dramatically. The original thread mentioned TED the movie, that has been one of the first movies that my wife and I have walked out of. (Vulgarity, etc.) Don't get me wrong, I will see mostly any movie but this movie would have been so much funnier if they would have cut out all that crap.
Try the early shows if you can, that will make a big difference. (I hope)

When I travel I do just to fill the free time, and when the kids want to see some new cartoon like Ice Age. So yeah, I guess I do...

I still go to the movie's a fair amount. I usually go to the 10am showing during the week. Never have to worry about rude people, as i'm usually the only one in there. The theatre has 20 different theatre's with 2 imax screens in them. On Tuesday and Thursday at 10am you can watch any movie for $5.00 with unlimited soft drinks and popcorn.

That's awesome, but either the neighbors would call on me or the riff raff around here would try and steel the screen while hte movie was playing

I am lucky,
The railroad company is expanding their tracks.
They are adding another set of tracks to the existing tracks. So they are extending the right of way and wont be any access to the trailer in front of me.
So my neighbors to the front of the screen don't live there anymore and the trailer is being moved out and then they are closing the road at the tracks permanently.

So I will be basically the last house on the road.

Stealing it well that could happen.

Rarely go anymore. With the wife slowly loosing her vision and hearing its tough. Plus its a lot cheaper to get the blue-ray disc and watch it at home. The last time I went was with my co-workers to the Flix Brewhouse in Round Rock Texas. They have waitresses that come around and take your order before the movie starts. Plus taking or using the cell phone is grounds to be walked out. They do warn you about that when showing all the advertisements.

Joe

My wife and I go to a "Dinner & A Movie" theater. Yes, it is more expensive (depending on what you order for your meal ($20-$65 plus the alcohol if you so desire); but, there are no children, no phones, no food throwing and if your neighbor talks to their guest you are far enough apart that you really don't hear it.

Almost Never

My wife goes a couple of times a year but I have not gone to a movie theater but once since 1996. I just don't think there are very many movies that I want to see bad enough to pay for them....I don't buy movies for my 65 inch TV either. I watch the free ones - then I don't feel bad when they suck. Which is nearly always.

It seems they can't make movies any more without foul language, naked women and at least 40 people getting shot.
