Got a used dishwasher given to us as a gift. The drain pump just quit working. It cost $225 to get it installed last month, the pump is around $150 with shipping. Not sure if I want to put it in myself. Kinda thinking about just skipping the pump and buying a new unit.

Are there other things that usually start going wrong after the drain pump? Not a big fan of dishwashers, but my wife really wants one.

Can't help with the 'what else can go wrong category" but the new, quiet dishwashers work really well.

I had always been a rinse before putting in the dishwasher. As a test, I put a baked-on enchilada pan directly in the dishwasher without rinsing and waited a day or two before running the dishwasher. I'll be darned, clean as a whistle on the long cycle.

After a couple of months, 2nd test.... same baked on enchilada pan... SHORT, 1 hour cycle. I'll be darned again. Clean as a whistle. No more long cycles in this house. It may be a choice of dishwashing "Pod" but I'm not about to try to fix a combination that is working right now.

Watch TV 20 ft away and can't tell it's running.

I can attest to the quietness. We had a new one installed a couple years ago and most of the time I think it's not working because it's so quiet.

If it's as easy as changing a clothes washing machine I would opt to do it myself. Two hoses, a couple of hose clamps and about three or so mounting screws and the pumps are cheap. The hard part is laying on the ground to fix it. Good luck on your adventure.

If you are going to buy a new one, GET YOUR WIFE INVOLVED! IF You pick it out and buy it, and it dies just after the warranty goes out, you get blamed even if she accidentally runs a copper scrubby through the pump! DAMHIKT  😁

Seriously though, get her involved in the choice and look over what choices are available and do comparisons for options. Google reviews. What options are important to your wife in a dishwasher. She may not know until she sees them, then again, it may be you (like me) that does not know! 😊

Installing dishwashers are not all that hard - but a question is - are you a handyman with cabinetry - in case you need a built in type. If not, then it is a matter of adding a hot water line and a drain.

I had a similar problem with a dishwasher not draining. Replaced the pump. Didn't fix the problem. Turned out to be the drain line plugged. The config of the drain was an unbelievable mess.

Great advice, Hank. We've been married 40 years and that was an early lesson. Bought a new washing machine a few weeks ago, I did ALL of the research. She decided on a completely different brand and model. Guess which one we got. Harmony is worth more than a star (or two) from online reviewers.
