I normally make pens and small turnings. I made a segmented chess board and now I want to make chess pieces and looking for alternative to Woodcraft for different kinds of dimensioned lumber. Looking for 1" to 1-1/2" thick by almost any width. I looked at CSI and wondering what else there is out there.

Mike, Like Dan has mentioned, cut down a 2x4 or any other 2x lumber. Any wood that is 3/4" or more, is usually perfect for most types of pens. And if you're into turning the slimline model of pens, most 1/2" stock will work. Good luck.

There are lots and lots of online sellers for what you want.
Cook Woods carries very high quality timber.
Wall lumber
Advantage lumber
Amazon Exotic Hardwoods Inc—which has nothing to do with Amazon.

If I were you, I'd call these places and tell them what I'm looking for.

One thing I wouldn't do is turn chess pieces from a 2" X 4". If I'm going to make a chess set, I'm going to use a tight-grained hardwood.
Practice with 2X material—fine, but not for the actual set.

Gilmerwood.com is another online option. Pros: good selection, quality photos of individual boards, good prices (per board foot). Cons: shipping costs are not automatically calculated and can be rather high (this can offset the low board foot prices)
