Chris I have woundered the same thing and thought I would just try it. Finished a piece of dyed burl in lacquer and it turned out great. And the person that it was a gift for was very pleased

Some woods take different finishes better than others. I have not had great luck with the oily woods and CA.

But I do agree with Wayne on this one. Enduro always looks good.

Having said that I finish with Enduro two different ways. One is to rub it on like Wayne does and the other is to dip it. The difference is that the dip tends to produce a thicker glossier finish but feel more plasticine. The finish that people really like the feel of is the three or four coats of Enduro with a light sanding between each coat. It leaves a more 'natural' feel to the wood.
