Hi, I'm Roger and I've been a member for a few months. I have to confess to being a typical male in at least one way-I didn't read the directions. Sooo-only after seeing so many folks introduce themselves as new members today, did I realize that I should have done so.

Anyway, here goes. My adult son got me back into turning about a year ago, when he was given a small Chinese lathe that is popular now. I pulled my old, old lathe out, realized it had seen better days, and then bought a decent used one on Craig's list. Since then, we have each done around 150 pens, and I've done a ton of other stuff, mostly wine stoppers, key chains, kitchen utensils, and lots and lots of bowls, candlesticks and vases. I love wood, and turning is about as much fun as this 56 year old has had in the last 10 years !!

We recently were vendors at a large fair, and did nicely. Surprisingly to us, our high end Majestic Jrs, Jr Gent II's etc. sold very well and we also sold a ton of bullet type pens, and lots of slimlines. We were thrilled, especially because we got compliments.

Anyway, I'm blown away at the quality of the work displayed here, and the knowledge of the "older hands". Especially the kitless pens are WAY, WAY beyond what I can do. So, I learn every time on come on the site, and the members are not only funny, but often very kind. It is a pleasure to be here; hope to get to know lots of you.

Thanks,

Roger

Hello Roger,

Welcome to the forum and turning. In case you suffer from more of the male abnormality of " who needs instructions" check out the library for a wealth of tutorials and videos. BTW, what part of IL are you from, I'm in DeKalb.

Welcome to the Vortex from Southern MD!!!! Dont worry about instructions when you got your Man Card it states you only read Instructions alone so no one sees or after the project went so horribly wrong it now serves as Kindeling. I didnt read that on the back of my card till later either...just sayin

Thanks for the suggestions and the welcome, everybody.

Once I can get myself a "white box", and figure out how to take decent digital pics of pens, I will post some of my work. I'm an old guy who still wishes cameras had film, because me and the word digital are too often enemies. Sometimes, I feel like a blacksmith back in the day when cars were introduced. Guess that's why I like older tools.

All the best.

Roger

Thank-you Mark. It is especially wonderful to have a common interest with person on a different continent !

I went to your web site, and let me congratulate you on it. It is very well done, informative and attractive. Your pens are stunning.

I was sorry to hear that you suffered such a serious back injury, and that it had such a terrible effect on your life. I salute you for finding and pursuing something that allows you to overcome your disability except on very bad days.

I understand the agony of back pain. Due to a small accident, but mainly a congenital problem in my spine, I suffered two severely herniated disks 12 years ago. I am an attorney, and American doctors have little use for lawyers because of the frequency of medical malpractice suits filed against doctors, so they refused to operate for almost a year. Even morphine began to have little effect. Thankfully, they relented and my surgery did give me a great deal of relief.

I understand the diversion that wood turning in general, and pen turning in particular can be. Even when my back and one leg hurt so much I have trouble walking down the stairs to my shop, I do so because after I am there for 30 minutes, I hardly feel the pain.

Good luck, and best wishes. Keep up the BEAUTIFUL work.

Roger

Welcome Roger! I also was trying to build a "white box" setup. I built one yesterday with #2447 white translucent acrylic and got some lights at Home Depot but I was unhappy with the lights...they got too hot and didn't provide enough light. So I was browsing the net today for lights and ended up buying a complete setup with a light tent that has backdrops and lights with stands, etc for not much more than I paid to try to do a home-built version. Maybe you will find something you like also:
