Anybody ever spin cherry? I was at a surplus store in our city and seen that they had cherry boards on sale. I hot a 4†x 3†x 7’ board for $10. I am not sure if it’s a good wood to make pens out of or not or if it was a good deal but I got it. Did I do a good thing?

If you like it when you turn it, you got a GREAT deal. Even free wood can be a bad deal if you hate it. If it doesnt make good pens, do you ski?

Mike, that's a great price for cherry. I've turned several pens from cherry and it turns very nicely. Figured or burl looks better for pens but at that size you can turn a number of things with it... small bowls, lidded boxes, Christmas ornaments, bird houses, etc. I wish I could find a deal like that. Mike, if you like the wood, it's all good. Keep your tools sharp and your lathe turning fast. Cherry is some sweet wood to work and looks great with a wax/lacquer finish. In my opinion it only gets better with age.
