Desert Ironwood - turned black!

I was just turning a Desert Ironwood pen - everything was going well, until I started applying CA...

The tip of the blank was black - natural colour, I thought - but once the thin CA hit it, the blackness spread to cover the entire blank...it has no distinguishable grain at all, now...

ANy ideas about what I did wrong?

The CA toasted the grain-----hind site is the easy part----if you would of used some Danish oil it would of looked great. Sorry

Try sanding it off, hitting it with a coat of BLO and then use the CA, it seems to work well for me.

I used BLO the first time too - guess it just got too hot...

If you started with BLO and it turned dark after that----heck----just blame the stupid wood. You did it right.

I would blame the wood at that point also, but some would blame Gary.:biggrin:

Andrew, is it possible that the temperature in your shop could be effecting that wood? I just tried to duplicate it in my shop and really had to work at it to darken it.
