One of the Christmas presents my wife gave me was a trip to Phoenix, AZ for the Barrett Jackson Classic Car Auction. Now I wasn't allowed to buy a car but I did get to see some awesome cars that went for a Million dollars and more .

That part of my trip would have been good enough but today I was able to score some Desert Ironwood. I'm not sure if I should tell you how much I paid for this wood but it was less than $100:eek:.

Now it won't all fit in my carry on but I will add some to my checked luggage. My Father-In-Law has agreed bring the rest to South Dakota this spring where I will pick it up when we visit them this summer.

Depending on how that guy from SD behaves during the best contest the BASH has to offer (http://www.penturners.org/forum/f312/), I may some have to share with him

If you would like some nice carob and African sumac as well, PM me and I will put some together for your Father In Law to bring to you as well. I, too, had one of those scores...an 8' x 12" diameter desert ironwood log.....about two years ago. It pays to befriend your local tree trimmer!

I drove past the Auction tents last week...both the BJ and the Rosso and Steele. One of these days I am going to go. A couple of years ago a bad storm blew through during the auctions and picked up one of those tents and draped it across the adjacent freeway! What a mess! It caused a number of wrecks on the freeway, and the rain really messed up some of the open cars at the auction.

A word to the wise....you may have to buy a carbide blade for your bandsaw....that ironwood really eats blades. I was able to sell off a couple of pieces of the log on Wood Barter to pay for a new carbide blade.

Here is an article on the damage done at the auction when that tent collapsed.

Sharon,
I do appreciate the offer but I'm flying home this afternoon. I'll be back with the family in March so if you still have some wood, maybe we can work out a deal .

I do remember that tent catastrophe making the news in Minnesota. Sad that all those cars were damaged but at least nobody was hurt...

It's yours for the taking. My neighbor has a huge African sumac that is slowly dying, and every time he has a big limb removed, I salvage the best part of it, and another friend just took out a big carob. So I can "share the wealth."

Doug,
You could have just left your clothes behind and got a bigger suitcase and all that could have gone home with you ....:biggrin::biggrin::biggrin::biggrin::wink:

I am bringing most of the smaller pieces home with me. I fit a couple pieces into my suitcase and I loaded a cardboard box with 47 lbs of it (right under the 50lb limit ). I can check two bags for free so I'll have my suitcase and my box .

The only stuff I couldn't pack were the long pieces. Now if only I had brought my golf clubs with on this trip
