If a woodturner group ask you to do a demo. What does someone need to charge(or do you)to go out of state and do a demo? It would require an overnight stay to do it.

What are your thoughts on the matter

I'd say if you don't NEED the money, just do it for free! You could also see if someone would let you stay at their place. If you do need the money then come up with a figure that would pay for your stay, food, gas, etc. and if they can't do that, then you may have to decline the offer...

If a wood turners group asked you to do it I am sure they are repaired to pay you expenses even if you volunteered your time for free.

It is more of an informal demo, a bunch of memebers gathering around and just watching or a serious demo where you'll be explaining everything in great details and possiblely have hand outs?

At minimum, I think it would be fair that they compensate you for your out of pocket fees (gas, hotel, etc.)

The last one I did I had handouts and it was video'd and they sold copies of the demo. I spent 2 hours doing 2 separate demo's. Had a separate handout for each. and vendor list for those that wanted to do it also. It was my local group. I ended up with my annual fees covered for the next year

In this case I would charge for the demo, it's no longer just a quick show and tell, especially as they are making money from it.

You could also ask for a small amount (plus expenses) for doing it and then $1-$5 per DVD sale?

Our Club just had John Jordan do a demo which was about 4 hours long, possibly longer, he had to stay over night and travel a good 350 miles, Now keep in mind the man is a Professional turner, he only charged our club $675.00 which we thought was quite reasonable, plus he offered a20% discount on his tool line.

I dont know what qualifies one as a professional turner. I am new to whole idea. ALot of folks at our group saw my pens and wanted to know how I do my finish. Thats how it all started and now a couple of other groups have inquired about it.

This is uncharted territory for me. So any advice is greatly appreciated.

Most clubs at a minimum at least pay your expenses and if it requires an overnite stay they usually rent you a motel room or put you up at one of the members homes. The only out of state one I have done I went to Oklahoma City to do a bullet pen demo. There they took my wife and I out to eat before the demo, rented us a motel room, plus gave me a check to cover my expenses.

My wife and I belong to a local artist association.. for this year she is president of the association and I am VP... she's a painter and I'm the only wood turner that belongs... we often have visiting painters, sculptures and other artists come in and do demos and speak before the group... most are local and only have to travel a short distance... We pay between $75 and $125 for them.. depending on their fees... and often try to set up a workshop for a later date that is also charged to the members if they take the workshop... workshop fees are around the same range, again depending on the demonstrators fees.

I would say at least cover your expenses, or at least a large portion of them.
