Trying to finish up a large order & ran into a snag. My quill will not move forward or backward. It appears frozen in the tail stock. Not sure of what step I need to do to unfreeze it. Any help is appreciated...

Are you sure you did not just torque it into its final resting place and all you need to do is put a bit of extra muscle power on the wheel? I am assuming you did not put CA glue on the gears! Ho ho ho!! Philip

Hey Philip, thanks for the response. LoL, definately no CA on the gears... Been trying to work with the flu, so maybe I'm a little weak...

Can you take it apart clean & lube?
Thanks Wildman for the response. Took it back apart again today. Everything seems normal but quill/innards seems frozen.

Soak that area in lacquer thinner. just keep dripping it on the end of the quill so it will run inside.

Thanks Leatherman for the response. Took it back apart & sprayed it down with some WD 40 that I had on hand. Let it soak but nothing seemed to help.

So finally I had enough & just got the old rubber mallet out & started giving it some nice taps to get things loosened up & then started giving the turn wheel some nice little taps (well maybe not quite so nice little taps-) & presto broke free. Well oiled/lubricated & all is working well again.

Take the quill lock down screw completely OUT of the tail stock. Take a dental pick and scrape inside the threads where the quill lock meets the side of the quill.

Sometimes (I noticed it happening when I used a live center made for a metal lathe), the live center gets very hot, thereby transferring heat to the taper and the quill.

This heat buildup can cause the lubricant on the quill to crystalize around the quill lock. Until you free the "glue effect" at the quill locking screw, the quill will not retract.

DAMHIKT!

Thanks I will watch for that!

I have had good luck using a spray dry lube every couple of weeks. I disassemble the tailstock like you did, remove everything and soak it. Let it dry, then reassemble. No problems with heat build-up and very little particles lodging in the threads. At the same time I spray down the bed rails, too.
