I gave a buddy at work a pen and in turn he gave me some deer antler, with a promise of more if I like it ... I like it!

It was my first time turning anything other than wood. The antler is very hard but it was easy to turn and real easy to sand. Sanded to 2000 then hit it with a paper sack (don't have any MM yet) I sqeezed the spiinning blanks with the paper between my finger and thumb until it was to hot to handle and I couldn't belive how much they shined. It didn't need a finish but I chose to hit it with some CA and BLO to seal it up. The marrow sure has a nice purple color to it that I hope doesn't fade.

Your turning job is excellent. That is a terrific pen. If someone had suggested using heat like you did to produce a shine on antler, I would have said it wouldn't work. [:I] Bone doesn't melt. But your technique did something right. Very fine finish.

I like it also Shane. Antler is probably my favorite to turn.
When you feel comfortable, try doing some closed end pens with it. It's a lot of fun, and they look awesome! IMHO [8D]
