Hi,

Anyone can talk to me about the difference in the sound level between a dust collector and shop vac. Is it same thing or really more quiet?

Thanks in advance

Alfred

I think it really depends on which one you buy.

From my own experience, ShopVac is much noisier. My DC (ShopFox) is louder but the shopvac produces a higher pitched noise. Again this is just my own experience. Air movement (CFM) is also not comparable and should be the biggest deciding factor.

Alfred, I use a qsp (i think it is) shop vac and it's still quite loud. I would think a large DC would have an induction motor and would be a quieter. At least as Dario says, less of a high pitch noise with most DC's

Al,I think if my DC was in the same room as the rest of the work shop it would be louder roar than the shop-vac.. but since I put it outside closet and just run the hose through the wall, I only get a muffled vacuum sound and the sound of the air sucking from the hose end.... shop-vac is louder when I use it.

I currently use a Rigid Shop vac with a muffler installed and a JET 1200-C dust collection system (6"). Both are inside my shop area and are about the same distance from my main work area around the lathe.

Even with the muffler installed, the Rigid is quite a bit louder than the JET.

Regardless of the noise I will NEVER work without an excessive amount of dust collection capabilities to protect my long term health from the major dangers of air born dust contamination. These days it is far less expensive than a hospital visit to spend the bucks to buy a very good dust collection system. Not to mention the time in recovering from the dangers of these exotic wood's dust that is constantly being generated as we work.

To me it just makes danged good sense to be careful ...! [:D]
