Those little white marks will not absorb. Did I do something wrong or is that the way it goes sometimes.

Looks like sanding dust to me as well. Keeping compressed air at lathe - ether via compressor or canister like used for computer keyboards - helps. Thoroughly blast piece with DRY compressed air, followed by solvent wipe. With wood I use DEA -denatured ethanol - instead of 91% IPA - isopropyl - to minimize the amount of water being placed on the wood surface. With porous wood and sanding dust, water is trouble.

I have Denatured alco but too lazy to walk 10 feet to get it. 91 was In front of me. Therefore I pay the dues. Not critical as it's a cane but I'll know for the future.
