Cypress

A young lady I know from my dentist office mentioned during a casual conversation between the dentist and myself she had bought a home and was cleaning up the yard. She had trimmed a tree (Cypress) and had saved some of the big pieces. She said to help my self they were stacked along her driveway.
So the question today: has anyone turned pens from Cypress and how did they come out?
I am not sure if I should pickup some of the wood.......well on second thought I can always use on other projects.

You must have missed George's (Robutacion) first Mr. Anonymous contest. George gave away a bunch of beautiful cypress blanks. That wood has a great aroma and will give your shop a great smell. Get all you can - quick!!

Cypress I've used in woodworking would not make the best pens. Very soft and big growth rings. Any wood can be turned into a pen, but I wouldn't put any effort into cypress.

Cypress is like any other wood, some can be very straight grained with no color changes, others can have fantastic grain and color changes, plus interesting knots. The price is right, you can always use it to roast marshmellows if it is not worth turning. Cypress runs from white to cream, pink to red, and usualy has very dark knots. Here is an example of a Cypress pen with a little metalic powder to replace a knot that blew out. Jim S

Given the price, you could also use some to experiment with bowl turning and other potentially addictive variations on things that can be made with a lathe...
