I have a cypress knee that was given to me and i am wondering what to do with it. Anyone here ever cut into one to see the wood grain in it? Would it be good to just turn it?
They are used a lot for carving. Cypress wood isn't all that interesting (to me anyway). It's a good light colored wood for making embellished turnings (burning, coloring, etc.) but kind of bland on it's own. I don't think I would use one to make a pen, but that's just me.
I made some Cypress pens many years ago when the company I worked for got a few logs in. Not an impressive pen, looks like pine grain wise. But smells nice when you turn it!! The logs were underwater salvaged so they had some history to them.
