Ray:
Bill Pentz was instrumental in developing the cyclone dust collector system . Many of the current cyclones use his research. If you google "bill pentz cyclones", you'll find a wealth of information on building your own system.

One company in particular that has done a good job with cyclones is clearvuecyclones.com. They have good information and links to more info about cyclones.

In a nutshell, cyclone technology seperates the wood chunks from the fine dust and stores them in different places. The end result is better efficiency AND cleaner filters that require few changes.

I hope this helps.

I made a simple one, but I went for "easy" - not necessarily cheap.

I bought a metal garbage can, and a lid that is sold at woodcraft. I upgraded it a tad by putting a 'plate' underneath that acts like a baffle based on some other ideas that I had seen that made sense (by not having such a straight shot to the output).

Overall - I don't know how good its doing, but it does cut down ALOT on the amount of stuff that makes it to the DC.

Hess ...

Bill Pentz is the designer of the Cyclone devices. Contrary to what many state his business is still around just under new management/ownership.

His site above will teach you just about all there is to be known about Cyclone technology. Lots of valuable information there for you to read.

Phil Thien has this baffle design to put into a DC system and creates a mini-cyclone type vortex that really does a slick job. The plate is simple to make and easy to install. I have his baffle on all three of my DC systems and couldn't be happier with the results I aam getting. Be sure to visit the DISCUSSION FORUM at the botton of the main page.

To answer your first question, a cyclone is just a type of pre-separator. A lot of your chips and dust will settle to the bottom of the cyclone collector and not even make it to your DC filter...

Dean, do you have any photos of your modifications that you wouldn't mind sharing?
Your setup sounds just like what I intend to do .... (If Santa determines That I have been good enough to deserve the lid from Woodcraft)

The cheapest way is to make the lid yourself. I can send you the solidworks file if you want to look at the design and trace onto wood or if you have someone local with a cnc router, they can cut it out for you very easily from the files.
