Hi everyone. Just got my pot built and am ready to get started. One question Does anyone cut and drill there blanks before stabilizing? That is if you know what kit you will be making. With the hole drilled it should penetrate the wood better and being cut you will not be stabilizing the cut off. Didnt know if this might cause cracking. Thanks Rich H.

I drill most (especially cobs) that I stabilize with either a 3/16" or 1/4" bit. This helps to speed up the saturation and promote it. I can use the blanks for whatever kit I choose later on. I've never had any problems with cracking.

The center probably would have to be re-drilled as it would pick up solids from the stable process. And, with many fragile woods, a big reason for stabilizing in the first place is because they can, and often do, blow apart during drilling.

I drill my blanks with an undersized hole and on some blanks, I turn off (or cut) off whatever waste that is possible first. The less wasted stabilized wood is better and it will increase penetration.
