Custom gunstock

I started with a rough cut curly maple stock for a Marlin 60 about 8 years ago. I got the action and trigger guard fit and roughed out the finger grip pistol grip as well as the finger grooved foregrip and a cheek rest. Then I got sick again, and after multiple years of hospitals and nursing homes I forgot about it. My wife was doing some cleaning of our attic and came across it about a week ago. I added an african blackwood tip and pistol grip, did some shaping and alot of sanding. I also polished the barrel, mag tube, bolt, and receiver. The sights need to be put on still, and I think a black trigger guard would be better, but all in all I think it turned out great. All I used was sandpaper, files, a dremel, and alot of elbow grease. My wife also helped sand on it. The finish is multiple coats of oil, then a final sand, then buffed and waxed.

Excellent stock! Many don't know what is involved in making a custom stock, especially the final fitting. Now, stocks are cranked out on automated machines, several at a time.

It DEFINITELY is a ton of work. Im lucky in that my wife will let me sit on the couch and sand or shape with my dremel all day and even take over for me if I need her to as long as I clean up afterwards.
I'm not even into these guns. I love Ruger 10/22s but if I recall correctly I got the stock and some parts on trade for some work I did for someone and figured I'd see if I could make a nice one since I think they are ugly how they are.

I tried to dye the stock blue but the dye turned out horrible so I had to take it down further to get all the dye out. I don't know why the dye came out so bad. I can only think its from the oils I put on 8 years ago.

Absolutely beautiful work. I wouldn't know where to begin much less have the skills to make a stock. While I like checkering, I like your stock much better without it. Shaping is perfect on the stock and checkering it would detract from the overall beauty of that wood. Any plans to glass bed or free float the barrel ? It's incredible workmanship !!

Honestly Im not sure what I'm going to do with it. I might put it in my gun cabinet and look at it every few years or sell it. My kids are 22 and 18 and I already built each of them a custom Ruger 10/22 with them however they wanted it. My oldest was challenging, he wanted it gloss black and polished brass. We made everything from the buttplate to the trigger out of solid brass using files and sandpaper. I found gold colored sling swivels even. But yeah I guess I am just glad I finally semi-finished it. Thank you for the really kind comments. It really made my day!
