I have been recently asked if I could turn a set of crochet hooks for their mother. She used to have a set that her husband had carved and just over the years they've all broken bit two. Just wondering of anyone has ever attempted this of if anyone might know where I could get the instructions to do a set. Of o get them done, I'll have to post.

I have made them and the tricky part is the hook. You must chose a wood that will stand up to the fine detail required and not break at first use. Try hard maple or other fine grained woods and then soak the tip in CA thin glue to add strength.

Back in the day they made them out of whale bone and ivory. I have a couple of books on scrimshaw that has photo's of them. Might do a google search. The other thing you will find out is what size number she uses or they were. Since they have a number of different numbers that denote size and the resulting stitch. Hit a craft big box fabric store as the have cheap plastic ones for a model and sample size.

I have made many of these. There is a pretty big market for them. The big problem is there are many different sizes that are used so it was kinda hard to keep them stocked ahead of time. When I first started I just looked them up on the net and found a ton of info. Good Luck!!!
