I have finished another batch of Craft Knife Hardware Kits. They're like an x-acto knife, but NICE!

These are made entirely by me from scratch in my basement shop, mostly on a little Unimat DB200.

Cost is $18-$25 per kit with multiple blades, covers, instructions, and support.

You can buy them from:
MyEBooth (no fees, less $)
or
Etsy

Thanks, please drop me any questions you have!

Turn On!

I was disappointed that nobody makes a compatible spear-point marking knife blade. Those blades are flat on one side and have two bevels on the other side, so the knife can be used on either the left or right side of the straightedge. Like this:

Edit:
I take it back. While searching for a different link, I found this, but I don't think they will fit @PersonMakeObject's tools. In addition, the price for these two blades is rather high:

I agree @penicillin, it would be great if a single bevel spear-point blade were available to fit in this hardware and similar knives. Alas, I have been unable to find them.

I am pretty sure the Pfeil-Swiss blade linked is too thick to fit in the holder. The slot on these is 0.025" to accommodate the 0.0245" thickness of the Swann-Morton blades.

best regards,
-kevin

Not sure if this is a double edge single bevel, but it might be what you are looking for.

-> Unfortunately, the Excel 20023 blade has a bevel on both sides - front and back, as well as left and right. The blade looks the same when you flip it over on its back. It would NOT be suitable as a marking knife for woodworkers.

I called the manufacturer of the blade. They were super nice and helpful. I would recommend them as a source for other blades just for their excellent phone service. I described the common spear point marking knife, and suggested that there may be a market for them if they decide to manufacture it.

Bevels on both sides, NOT useful as a woodworking marking knife:

I was afraid of that when I was looking. I googled for other images to see if it was beveled on both front and back, but couldn't find a picture showing both.
Oh well, it was worth a shot.

@penicillin - I've been in contact with Swann-Morton and the biggest US seller of their products and they are investigating adding a single bevel, spear-point blade to their offerings. From discussions with them I think there is a good chance that such a blade will be available within the year. I've ground a few samples that I'm testing out and it absolutely seems viable in the hardware.

I emailed Excel a suggestion that they consider a spear point blade but I never got a reply. It's interesting to hear that you found them receptive to a suggestion. I may have to embark on a little social media campaign to get others to make the suggestion.

I recently reground an Excel #26 into a single bevel spear point and it fits perfectly into the blade holdware and works great for transferring dovetails.

I spoke with the friendly customer support person. She was very nice, but probably has little authority or influence to make anything actually happen.

I am impressed with how well you flattened the back of your blade. It looks perfect.

@penicillin I got an email address for a product manager at Excel and sent them the suggestion. We'll see - I think I presented a good case.

I made a crude jig for my Worksharp 3000 to grind the blade. It definitely worked as a proof of concept. I think this is the excuse I've been looking for to get a 3d printer to make a good fixture to do them more easily and consistently. Thinking of getting blanks of HSS water jetted and grinding them to R, L, and Spear-Point single bevel blades to add to my offerings.

Thanks Guy! It sounds like you should post in the Product Testing and Review section! Don't worry about opening the kit, there are more where that one came from!
