Costa Rica

As some here know Dee and I have sold "The Classic Nib" and will be taking a well deserved vacation next month to Costa Rica. Our first vacation in 30 years. We have traveled all over the west,mid west and east coast but always for business. This trip is not only a vacation but also a fact finding trip as we are really thinking of moving there. We will be staying in the Central Valley in Grecia for two weeks and traveling around the country looking at different areas but from what we have read the Central Valley seems to be where we are leaning towards as the temperatures are spring like year round, 80-85 days and 60-65 nights and about a 45 minute to an hour drive to the beach. My question is have any of you been to Costa Rica? And if so were you impressed, where did you stay and was your stay at the beach or inland?

In 2010 I spent 2 days sight-seeeing in San Jose waiting to depart on a SCUBA diving trip departing from Puntarenas on the Pacific Coast. The bus drive from the capital to the port was quite exciting going through mountains and rain forests, to the low lying coast.

A beautiful country! Helps to speak Spanish. Many of the retirees from other countries lived in gated neighborhoods. Many homes were surrounded by barbed wire...

At a roadside craft stand I bought this turned Rosewood Bowl for $4.00.

Mark, we understand that in some cities the petty crime is bad, the reason for gated neighborhoods is to keep out locals looking to steal from your car, not from the house (but home invasions are also a possibility. That's the reason we are looking more out in the country and not in tourist areas.

My wife and I spent three weeks in Costa Rica last December. We spent the time in the northern part of the county visiting the small towns of La Fortuna (about 1 hr north of San Juan) , Monteverde (in the middle of the mountains and national park reserves) and Tamarindo. Tamarindo is on the pacific coast is a bit of a beach bum / tourist type destination and it was ok but the place is growing and targeting tourists (big condo rental market for the beach tourists). While La Fortuna and Monteverde had their own tourist type aspects the areas were pretty laid back and it was comfortable to walk around the town and country side and eat at the local restaurants. We headed to this area to do some hiking in the rain forests and white water rafting. The locals we met were great and although my wife speaks Spanish it wasn't too difficult to communicate in English. What was a little surprising was the cell phone coverage. It was better in Costa Rica that in some place back home here in Canada. Good luck in finding a place.. where ever you pick I think you will enjoy it.
