I was contacted by a father looking for someone to teach 12 year old son some penturning. Connor and his Dad, Mike, came over and turned some pens. Connor turned his on a pen mandrel and Mike turned his between centers since I did not have bushings for his pen kit. Connor has a twin brother that is into soccer while Connor is into video games. Connor loves penturning and is saving money to buy a lathe. Connor was a little aggressive with his first attempt and blew out the side wall. He did much better on his second attempt. He did the entire pen with only limited assistance.

Great story and complements on the pen. I'm impressed he is working and saving for a lathe. Suggestion: if there any woodturners in the area, they might consider donating some tools to him.
Blowing out a blank shows two things about learning to turn: how to do it and how not to do it.
