Confused?

I have 3 sets of Alligator Jaw bone blanks that I have taken pics of and I cannot get them reduced enough to post in the classifieds. What programs do you use? I tried Gimp and the pic will not reduce below 1.8mb. Thanks in advance.

There are several choices for resizing pictures. If all you want to do to a picture is change its size then one of the easiest ways is the picture resizer power toy. Search for "picture resizer" and you will find several choices...some are downloads and others are online resizers.

I really like Picasa3 as Roy suggested.

Optimizing images in Gimp

In Gimp

1. File>Save As
2. The Save Image Dialog box opens
3. Make sure the Select File Type field is set to JPEG and Click the Save button
4. The Save Image as JPEG dialog opens
5. Check the Show preview in image window box to reveal the file size
6. Move the Quality slider to achieve the file size you're looking for

Theres a whole bunch but the easiest and smallest Ive found for this sort of thing is Irfanview.com
Similar action to GIMP only when you save as jpg it should ask you for image quality 0-100% - setting this on 82% gives you excellent web quality and reduces the file size substantially.

The simplest "program" that I have used is Microsoft Resizer. You simply right click on the photo and tell it what size and quality you want. Resizer is a free download from Microsoft.

If they're still 1.8mb, chances are that the IMAGE size is too large, not just the file size.
You probably want to change the image size down to 800x600 or thereabouts, since
anything larger is often wasted on a monitor.. and save it with a different name. That
way you've still got the larger image to go back to. An 800x600 jpeg might be in
the 40-50kb range, easily within the range for posting.
You'll want to do any cropping first, since it is the final image size that you want
to fit those parameters.

Any image software should allow you to do this, even the ones that don't allow you
to do much of anything else..

I use Fast Image Resizer, it's free on the web. Easy to use, drag and drop. You can set the size you want in the options. I have an icon on the desk top, just drag and drop pics on it and it goes to work. Again, very easy to use.

I second Irfanview. Compared to the other photo manipulating programs I've used, this one is definitely the easiest to use. And if you download the plugins, there is one you can use for saving pics to the web which decreases the storage size, not the physical size. What I mean is that you can resize your pics to 1000 x 1000 yet only be 100k.

The other plus is that Irfanview with the plugins can open a long list of files that other photo software can't even come close to.

Remember, for classifieds, the max image size is 700 pixels in the largest dim.
