Spalted tamarind and birch.
Just shy of 14" and 7.5 grams. CA finish on the handle. Wax/oil on the shaft. I would have done wax/oil on the whole thing, but I wanted to avoid skin grime from discoloring the tamarind. I decided on the finish to avoid cracking from the wood flexing and being tapped on stands. A glossier finish likely would have been better, but for small group work it should be plenty visible.
Took 7 tries to get the handle the right shape and size that I liked. The shaft was great practice for my skew technique to get that narrow (little less than 3/16") over that long of unsupported length. Based on the balance, I should have gone a little thinner to remove weight, but overall I am happy with the end result.
This is a commission from an aunt for her son's graduation gift. He is starting college in the fall for music theory and is a saxophone and choir kid.
