compressor problem

anybody know anything about compressors? i have a 12 to 15 yrs old porter cable pancake compressor that has started making a loud pinging noise when i turn it on. does this mean it is dead? any suggestions?

A "pinging" noise is a bit non specific for a diagnosis.

Anything else it is doing that may narrow it down a bit?

the ping went from soft to loud in about a 5 minute time period. i turned it off because i was afraid i was damaiging it.
