Picked up some resin at Michaels today to try my first casts.( gotta love those 1/2 off coupons) What do I use for coloring the resin? Michaels employees had no idea. And can the same colorant (sp) be used with alumilite?

buy the pearlescent packs in the stamp section..they work for both types of resin.

That's what I use. It's like 24 bucks for a pack of sample sized ones, so get another coupon.
Also, remember to color your tubes.

I bought powdered dyes from www.artstuf.com. That's where I also bought my resin, should be the same type of PR they have at Michaels but WAY cheaper if you buy the gallon. The powdered dyes work great.

I think I bought some powdered dye from there. It looks like purple baby powder. It's got no pearl in it though, didnt think of that back when. Kind of a waste, the pearlessence ones from Michaels look sooo much better. Live n learn.

I agree the pearl is nice, after all people buy shiny things. They have a pearlescent power dye that you can add to any of the artstuf dyes to get that shiny look, and you can adjust just how shiny you want it. Sometimes you don't want shiny (...I'm just making that up, I always want shiny, but still). You can add more pearl to it if you want it to be sh**load shiny. I don't know anything about the Michaels stuff, so take Skye's word on that.

Check out Coastalscents. Their mica powder works great and looks awesome. It has that "shine" you are looking for at a very reasonable cost. I have about 20 colors from them and plan on buying more. They also offer a small sample amount of any color for $1.00 , so you can try it out and if you like it, order more next time.

I use the mica powders from Coastal scents also . Their prices are great and their shipping is fast and they work with PR and Alumilite and they are also great for coloring epoxy for accents and for filling voids in cracked woods .

I've put together a set of color recipes-basically just my notes
and a color sample from when I cast- to help people decide what
they *need* to buy, especially if you're looking for a certain color.
Check out the Color Library
I just added another 14 samples, but the pictures didn't make
it. Hopefully tomorrow.
So far it's all PR based, but has dyes/pigments from Art Stuf, Pearl-Ex,
and Coastal Scents included (some of all, but not all of any).
