How much runout is okay for a set of collets? I'm playing with the idea of picking up a set of metric ER32 collets. However, the collet set I'm looking at supposed has 0.008" TIR. That seems like a bit more than I would have expected (perhaps it comes down to the quality of the collets ...). What are your thoughts? Should I go ahead and buy or keep on looking?

Thanks.

Is this for a wood lathe or a metal lathe? And are you sure that spec isn't 0.008 mm? That would be around 0.0003 inch, which would be good. If it *is* inches, then keep shopping.

Do you already have the collet adapter, and have you checked its internal runout?

Thanks Mike. It's for a wood lathe -JML1014. The guy that was selling said inches, but mm would be a whole lot better. I saw some offered on ebay - maybe I'll just go with those and call it good. Thanks!

Hello I also would like to hear the outcome on this.Because I am looking at collects.
I was looking at the set from PSI and then I had heard on here about the guy called
800watt on ebay had good deals on the ER32 18 piece.

I purchased my metric collet set from 800watt on e-bay two years ago. The price was right and I haven't had ant problems with collets.

yep, that's more than you should have, although not the very end of the world either. Distance compounds runout, so if it's .008, that's right flush with the collets and you can work with that ok, but once you get out a few inches from the collet, who knows how much bigger that number will get.
