Many people have discussed the Beall Collet chuck. Now he $ and figures:
Beall chuck $79.00 from web site
Beall complete collet set $ 179.00
Beall individaul collets $ 19.00

PSI collet chuck set $ 89.95 (from there catalog 096a1)

CUSA (Beall Collect chuck $ 82.99 (from catalog fall/winter)
CUSA complete set $ 162.99
individual collets $ 19.99

ebay There are several different ebay selers
800watt complete set off ER's 79.99
another seller US based 9.50 /ea

If any of you are in a turners club they might have a discount. My club gets a verey good discount with CUSA. And the ER I want and the collet chuck come out to just over a 100 bucks& change $100.70

There my 2 cent worth!

Bill,

Thanks for doing the math for me! I am thinking about getting a collet chuck, but was flipping between catalogs and my scratch pad to figure out the $$ between the kits.

One question I do have (anyone chime in here), will the PSI check take the collets from 800watt?

I like the fact the PSI will screw right on my headstock, but may want other collets...

If this is a hijack, slap me and I will happy make a new post...

E-Bay seller

I purchased a set from 800watt. It is a 24 piece ER40 set including:
Collets from 3-26mm, 2MT chuck, wrench, and hard case.
It was $99.99

ER series collets of the same size like ER-32 are supposed to be the same, same with ER -16 all of them are supposed to be the same, just different size range, the closers and receivers may be slightly different, but an ER-32 collet from one supplier is supposed to fit an ER-32 system from another supplier, While the collet fixture (holder) may be different all the collets of a particular series are in theory supposed to interchange,

I think the overall setup would be the base beall at 79 bucks plus the ebay collet set for another 75 bucks BIN.

I however went with the PSI for the knurled grip on the collet chuck nut due to poor hand strength. If Beall did this his would easily be the far and away winner overall since you can buy the collet chuck by itself.

The PSI chuck also comes with the 2 tommy bars for tightening and loosening.

I could have sworn I read on an earlier post that the WoodCraft chuck did not accept the collets from the other sets.

I got the PSI chuck just before Xmas, and found a coupon code for $10 off "dvd10" which with free shipping sealed the deal.

The Beall is a very good chuck. It does not have a knurled end, but it doesn't need one. It is a hefty enough size that you should be able to tighten and loosen it by hand. There is no reason to crank the crap out of a collet, just like there is no reason a table saw blade requires a clamp to tighten it on the arbor. In the even though that you have it on too tight to loosen it, the Beall has a set of wrenches, one for the neck and one for the head of the chuck. It doesn't make sense to buy either system as a set. It only makes sense to buy the chuck and then go elsewhere to buy the collets as an entire set...like ya'll say, ebay.

My PSI collet chuck wobbles. I think it was not tapped straight. Everything I turn comes out eccentric. Sent it in and we'll see what happens.
