I have an affection for handmade coin and veneer rings. I have been considering buying a dapping kit, punches and a ring mandrel for about a year now. (Would also come in handy for watch part blanks that I want to try).

The veneer rings need hardly any tools, but I think they are neat with exotic veneer.

Anyone here doing any of these? If so, any tips on tools?

I know there are other boards for this type of thing, but I wanted to start here.

Thanks.

Hi Cody,

I make a few of the wood rings. No special tools requited but the best "tip" that I can offer is to use thin strips of veneer to reinforce the ring. The little strip of veneer really reinforces the relatively weak wood. I like to use "contrasting" veneer bands to the wood ring to really set the design off.

Woodworkers Emporium sells stainless ring cores for about $5. They have an instruction sheet for downloading.

If you are sure you will use them a lot buy stainless steel for both the ring mandrel and dapping block and dapping punches. I went through 2 wood dapping blocks before I wised up. If just wanting to try it and not invest much, go with a wood dapping set from Harbor Freight.

For making my wood rings I buy plain stainless steel ring bands off of eBay. Then wrap with 2 or 3 layers of veneer and glue, seal etc. with CA glue.

If you search eBay for "stainless steel rings lot" you can find lots of an assortment of different sizes. Look for rings that are flat on top, some have domed tops, they will not work with veneer. My last bunch cost about $24 for 50 rings from 17mm to 21mm.

Thanks for the replies. Glad to know there are others here who like to do more than turn pens. I love turning pens, but like to do other things to keep the shop work interesting.

I will probably start with the HF set just to see if I enjoy the hobby. I like the idea of stainless steel bands too, so I'm gonna look into that.

Thanks!

Hi CM

Almost all of my work has Dyed wood veneers used in it.
I buy the sheets of veneers and the best is to take the sheet to your local trophy shop and tell them you want wooden washer cutout of the veneer you are supplying.
Their laser engraver should be able to do this no problem ...
I store my washers in a mint Tin ( little tin storage container ) so they don't get broken and they are fragile.

If you need veneer links to where to buy veneers I can provide that to .

I hope this helps .

Do you dye your own veneers?

Do you dye your own veneers?[/QUOTE]

I haven't got into dying my own veneers , In another forum the subject came up on different ways of making a veneer press.

cutting circle or washer out of the veneers is the issue

Acrylic inks color veneers very nicely. Works well as the inks resist fading.

I get minimal blessing when gluing with titebond II or III Water resistant glues
