For the last few weeks I've given up drinking so many diet sodas. Considering all the bad stuff in them I've switched to coffee. My wife collects antiques and has hung a 60-70 style coffee dispenser over a "coffee bar"she created. I'll skip the other details but I figured out that pulling the lever that dispenses it takes 7 times to make 10 cups of coffee. I haven't paid much attention to it but there's never any coffee left after my wife gets one cup. (I get up before her and go to the shop taking my last of 3 cups with me.)
Lately she's not been getting that last cup and I'll end up throwing that last bit of coffee away. Noticing how little that's being thrown away I got to mentally figuring how much coffee was I drinking. This morning after 2 "cups" the mark on the pot shows just a smidgen over 1 cup. I've been drinking 9 cups of coffee every morning! I think I was better off with the diet sodas. Here's the culprit. A 3 cup 6th Anniversary IAP mug!
That's my ramblings of the day, carry on.

Lol. We have cuusinart, so I use the pods. One 6oz cup in the mornings for work and maybe 2 of them on the wknds. An occasional dr. pepper once in a while.

About a 18 months ago I switched from about 5 - 7 diet colas a day to iced tea for most of the year (more coffee in the cold months). But I always start the day off with a 10 to 12 ounce cup of coffee.

Back shortly after my youngest daughter got married to a ceramic artist major and teacher, I commented that I would like to have a very large coffee mug that held the equivalent of several cups of coffee. Then I said: "Some day the doctor is going to tell me that I can only have one cup of coffee per day. So, I want a cup large enough to go through the day!" This is what he made me:

Three Mugs and ID 2.jpeg

BTW, Those are 12 oz mugs on the left with wood grain look that he made for me. The impact driver was put in for scale.

I never was a big soda drinker nor am I a beer drinker anymore. I have an old antique percolator coffee pot that's been in the family since the 50's. Makes 9 cups of coffee and I make 3 pots per day. On average my wife and I drink 8 cups of coffee a day each. Asked the doc about it and all he said was to make sure that wasn't our only source of water and that we needed to make sure to drink water too. I've never seen a coffee cup as big as the one Hank has in the photo above. That's some coffee.

Back in the day when I was still working, I had a coffee mug sitting on my desk from start of my day until I signed out in the evening.... I had one of those little heater pads that the cup sat on to keep it warm.... my boss complained that his office coffee fund doubled when he hired me and everyone complained if I made the coffee... too strong.... in those days I always drank it black... nowadays, I put a little creamer in the cup to tone down the stuff, but still make it pretty strong. Limit is now 2 cups in the morning.
Never was one to drink sodas much, don't touch them today.... do like a good porter with my supper now, but a good porter is hard to find.

We had a First Class Cook (that's a Navy PO 1st class). He would make the best coffee I've ever had and it was done in this giant vat that he would throw a sack of ground coffee into then boil it. I learned the secret to his coffee one day when I went to the spigot and nothing came out but just a few drops. He never washed out the vat, he just cleared the spigot and kept right on going. Boy was it great coffee though.

My wife and I both drink coffee, I would say about three cups a day each. I drink regular and my wife drinks decaf. We tried a Keurig, but soon found out, we weren't willing to spend that much on coffee. We bought a Ninja coffee bar and it has the capability to brew one cup at a time, using regular ground coffee and regular filters. I would buy another one in a heartbeat, if the one we have fails.

My father was adamant, that no one was to ever wash the coffee pot.

I start my day with two cups of double espresso (or should I say that two cups of double espresso starts me!). The rest of the day I drink tea, lots of it. What can I say, I'm British and there's nothing like a nice cuppa tea!

I've heard other old navy folks talk about coffee like that!

After searching we ended up with a Hamilton Beach that makes a12 cup pot or single cup using K cups. The nice thing about it is it came with a K cup you can put your own coffee in. No expensive pods unless you want them. I keep a box or two of decaf hanging around in case the mother in law comes by.

I have never liked coffee or tea and won't drink it much less make it.
I start my day with 16oz of hot cocoa. Not the junk in a packet but real Dutched Cocoa powder, milk, sugar and a splash of vanilla. Later in the day I'll have a can of Pepsi. Not diet. The rest of the day is water.

I roomed with a tea drinker. He almost killed me when I washed his teapot. Maddest I've ever seen him get. I stayed away from it after that. ;)

I would have too!!!!

I quit drinking coffee 6 months ago just because I wanted to kick the caffeine habit...I never really knew how addicted I was until I tried to stop...I started drinking decaf/herbal tea in lieu of coffee and the headaches were bad for weeks causing me to eat ibuprofen like candy which caused NSAID induced bleeding...it was a real wake up call for me and an expensive one...overall it took about 4 weeks to rid my system of that caffeine poison...I used to wake up cranky and would not speak until I had my coffee and everyone knew to steer clear until I had...now I wake up and am chipper without it...I did start drinking decaf coffee again but only have one cup a day...lots of studies show that coffee (in proper amounts) is actually good for you...

On board my ship when I was in the navy, the mess cooks made coffee first thing in the morning we had 2 30 gallon dispensers that wasn't replenished until both were empty... by the end of the day, you could just about spoon the coffee into your mouth... our chiefs and bos'n sent with a cup of coffee everywhere they went on the ship... rarely saw one without a cup in their hand. That's where I learned to drink coffee, but only in the morning when it was relatively fresh.

My father in law makes coffee so strong you can almost make a spoon stand up in it. When I was shooting competitively I always made sure not to drink any of his coffee until after I shot. I know the amount of caffeine in each cup raised my heart rate and blood pressure. As for the Chiefs and senior enlisted, they always had a cup of coffee in their hands. Those that weren't coffee drinkers but smoked always seemed to have a cigarette in their hand or mouth. There was one first class that would never flick the ashes off his cigarette he would walk around with the ash hanging off the end. We always wondered where the ash went when it finally fell off. Never did figure it out though.

Another thumbs up for the Ninja, best coffee maker we ever had. We are self proclaimed "Coffee Snobs" and only get coffee from a local small coffee roaster. They are only a mile down the road so it makes it really easy. It's more expensive but the flavor and quality is second to none.

If you order on the 9th of the month the price drops to $9.99 per lb. 5-6 lbs is about what we use in a month.

We use the big 30 oz "Big Dog" mugs we bought years ago. My 10 cup coffee maker just barely fills both of them!

I just saw this post today, and I know that it is an older post. However, I used to work with two guys who's coffee intake was unusual. One used to start out the day with a 64oz cup from the local convenience store full, when it was empty he would refill it. He did this several times during the day. The second guy was from Canada, and he would take a specially made funnel for brewing coffee, put a filter in it, and take a pouch of coffee for out commercial coffee maker and make his only cup of coffee for the day.

While in the USAF, I was stationed at a Navy base and had to learn to drink coffee right. Every afternoon, a 100 cup perculator pot was fired up. After the "Drink Enable Light" came on, it was shut down for the night. The next morning, the first person in would start it up again letting it run through its cycle again. Then before you could get your cup full, you empty a single serving package of hot cocao into your cup, then fill it the rest of the way with coffee. Now, that was coffee to wake you up!

Gotta ask Mark so here goes. A very long time ago, when I was young and stupid, the Navy sent me to jump school in San Diego and then Norfolk Virginia where I resumed my education at a Naval base in Northern Virginia, but it was run by the Air Force. They shuttled us back and forth between this very small private air strip but we always ended up at night on this base. Had two very large "golf ball" looking items that were clearly visible from 8,000'. Could this be the same base? The coffee was always superb and the meals were always great but I could never figure out the correlation between the Navy and Air Force. Just wondering.

I think Chuck and Tom will agree with me, that government issue coffee grounds were better than what we get from our grocers today. Back in my Navy days, I spent my last year running the gear locker, handing out tools and rigging for the day, AND making coffee in a 30 cup coffee maker. I haven't had an equally flavorful cup of coffee since then. It was really good with a splash of cognac!šŸ™ƒ

I preferred a splash of Jack in mine Chuck. Cognac was way to expensive.

Tom;
Different base, same outcome - the military is trying to consolidate its training so there is little duplication between the services. Army jump school teaches all branches, the Navy trains all divers, and so on. Eglin AF Base houses the EOD School, but it is run by the Navy and all 6 branches train there.
Those big round golf balls are either radar or communications sites.

Interesting about coordination between Navy and Air Force...
my last duty station in the Navy was on board a Destroyer Escort Vessel, The USS Finch... we were a radar picket ship and when we went to sea and were on station, we reported to the Air Force... we were part of the Air Early Warning system.... don't know if they still use the picket ships anymore.... think they've developed more sophisticated radar systems and may not need the ships. I know the Finch has been decommissioned and cut up for scrap.

I was teaching an ISO 9001 Lead Auditor course at Pax Rive Naval Air Station a few years back. The class consisted of a Lt. Cmd., a Master Chief, 3 Sr. Chiefs, a Chief and a Marine GySgt. First day a class, before I could say a word the Master Chief told the Chief and the GYSgt to go and locate a coffee mess. He then looked at me and "Sir, with your permission, we can't learn anything without a constant supply of coffee." My reply: "Roger that Master, C.M." Then with all coffee cups filled, we started the 5 day class.

When I was working, I counted my coffee intake in pots rather than cups! Now I'm down to three or four cups a day, and a couple of cups of tea a day. But I will risk being branded a heretic now: I use instant coffee! Tasters Choice House Blend. My Wife likes hers weak, so one rounded teaspoon for a cup. I use two heaping teaspoons for a cup! Instant is an easy way for us both to have the strength we want.

My older sister never drank coffee and still doesn't to this day, but her husband did... she always bought Taster's Choice to make his coffee... they were married almost 40 years before he passed away and never had a "real" cup of coffee from her.... I've never been a fan of instant coffee, but that was what I got when I visited her house.... My BIL never seemed to mind.

Since she didn't drink coffee, don't think she ever thought about the strength she made it or maybe BIL liked it strong....

My son uses a french press to make his coffee... I went on a road trip with him in his RV... he made coffee first morning after we got to Oshkosh.... I had coffee jitters after the first cup.

As usual, just when we get used to something being bad for us, another study comes out and says it's good for us now. This came out yesterday:

Apparently now caffeinated coffee is good for you, helps prevent heart damage and heart attacks. The more you drink the more positive effects you get. Can't be decaffeinated - that's bad for you now. What you add to your coffee can be bad for your heart.

When I was in the Air Force, I had one job that had a coffee pot an arm's length from my chair. I kept a cup on my desk all day every day. It never got empty and it never got cold.
