Wanted to show everyone the group project the club has been working on for the Southern States Symposium Auction. The auction benefits the symposium, and offers the money in scholarships to local wood turning schools. Our club is donating the project, so the symposium can use the money for scholarships. The main platter is about 22 inches across and 3.5 inches high. The "boxes" on the platter range in size from the smallest being 1 inch high without the top, to the tallest being 7 inches tall without the top. With the top the tallest "box" is almost 11 inches high. The platter is made out of Mohagany and yellowheart veneer for segments. There are 530 pieces total to make the project up! Each of the "boxes" are unique in the woods contained, and the shape and size. There is a total of 7 "boxes" on the Mohogany platter, and the "boxes" spiral into the middle of the platter with the largest "box" the center of the display. Each "box" sits in a figured maple "cup" afixed to the platter. The tops for each "box" are made from cherry, and the finials are made from Vermillion. Other woods used are Satinwood, Zebra Wood, Figured Mohogany, Dyed Veneers, Bloodwood, Yellowheart, oh and a few others that I am forgetting....A bunch of math and engineering went into the placement of each of the "boxes" to get it all laid out correctly.

Each piece was done by several individuals over the period of several weekends. The pieces were worked by the volunteers from our club, and are unique in every sense of the word. We had over a dozen hands touch and guide this piece to completion. Talk about team work! If you are in the Georgia area this weekend, the piece will be on display at the Southern States Symposium display table, and available for auction on Saturday night.

Well we had a spirited auction, and our group's piece raised $600 for the scholarship fund. A turner in the Alabama area won the piece, so you folks in Birmingham, may get to actually see this piece at your next club meeting!
