Yesterday I posted my weekly reminder thread of the pens in the IAP Collection. As we all know, frequently what we see on a screen is "No Way" as impressive as in person, or simply what a better photo can display. I have no real training in photography, but these photos do give a sense of the artistry that Ed (Ed McDonnell) achieved.

Rather than these pictures and info being buried in the previous thread, I started a new one. Enjoy!
(NOTE: I intentionally did not try to edit out the specks of dust, as this would distort the detail of the design. My editing skills with photos is rudimentary, so you get the dust included).

Previous Thread: IAP Collection Pen # 22.

Ed's Thread from 2014: Torture Testing.

Some additional Inspiration: My Masterpiece; Other Works.

This is really impressive. Can't tell what the various elements are made of or how they're made but definitely outstanding work.

Keep up the good work on the collection. Sent you a PM.

Mark is the red and black enamelled onto the metal? Thanks for the closeups. I appreciate the talent even more.

Pete

Hi Pete: This is the info that Ed sent. It is all I have. The format below is not the best, but it is copied from the info sheet that each pen in the IAP collection has. Some folks sent info, many did not.
I try my best to preserve the info for each pen, even if I am not conversant with the techniques/materials. Hopefully this will clarify some of your questions and possibly Ed will chime in.

Pen #: 23
Added to Collection: 1/17/2015
Turner: Ed McDonnell IAP: Ed McDonnell
Description of Pen: Champleve'/Guilloche' with modern materials
Materials: Brass C360 rod. Polyester resin with various dyes
Components: Glacia Gold
Lathe Used: Powermatic 3520b wood lathe; MicroLux 7 x 16 metal lathe
Tools Used: Taig CNC Micromill, Custom vacuum chamber, HSS gouges and cutters,
Various buffing wheels and compounds, custom jigs/fixtures.
Process: Cut rod to length and drill. Turn blank to finished dimensions. Carve
The cells (Champleve') and engrave the cell bottoms (Guilloche'). Cold
Enamel the blank with colored resin. Buff, apply clear coat, turn to Final size.
Maker's Comments: This pen offers visual stimulation on multiple levels. The contrast of
The ruby cold enamel with the golden brass carved barrel and gold
Plated components is pleasing in a not overly complicated design.
Upon closer examination the Guilloche' in the bottom of the cells
Becomes visible through the ruby.
The brass used in this pen does have a small lead content. The brass is
Completely encapsulated in clear resin and will not be in direct contact
With the skin. The resin clear coat should allow the brass to keep its
Untarnished golden look that nicely complements the gold plated
Fittings for many years to come.
The pen has some heft to it, but the smaller size of the pen will make it
Well balanced for writing in most hands. The pen is 4.75" (12cm) long
And weighs 1.7oz (48g).
