Replaceable. Pens break/get damaged, so it's never a good idea to make anything "permanent " if you can help it.

I've done it both ways and usually let the design dictate.

I attach my clips with a threaded finial.

I agree with @BRobbins629 , but usually my clips are attached with a screw on finial, same as @Bryguy .
