I had some water get into a plastic bag that had a #2 MT threaded for a buffing pad. The corrosion is unbelievable. I pitched the cloth wheels due to the amount of mold. Is the taper salvageable and useable or will I run into trouble later on?. Just so you get the idea of what it looks like this is one of the Arizona sil. buffing arbors. I was thinking of sort of soaking in a wd 40 type and maybe sanding.

You would be suprised what you can do with wd40 and some scotch brite pads. If it's pitted though it may not seat right. Not a problem for a buffing mandrel, but for anything else it may cause issues.

However you get it cleaned, short of using a file, it will be OK to use again.
You can set up an electroylsis bath and derust it that way. Easy to do, Google search you will find a lot of information on the process. All this does is remove rust and leaves good steel untouched.

Well i used some gunk equivalent to wd 40 and then I chucked it into the lathe and turned off most of the rust etc. Polished it with some old EEE shine and then some Bon Ami. Lots of pits but will be ok to put in the morse taper extender and use for buffing wheel. Thanks for the ideas. It is ugly compared to a new one.

Be sure to work through the threads for the restraining rod at the back (bottom). Usually that will take such things as a gun cleaning brush followed by a tap and more gun cleaning brush. Most are tapped for 3/8 by 16 or 1/4 by 20 threads. You can get a lot of crud inside a blind tapped hole.
