I am very new to woodturning. This is my first post to this message board.
I recently purchased a ShopFox 10" mini lathe. I've been turning pens, but I want to expand my options and turn small bowls, bottle toppers, boxes and some jewelrey as well. I am in the market for a set of chucks/jaws.
Has anyone heard of/purchased the Apprentice Chuck set from Wood Turners Catalog? It comes with No.1 ,No. 2, No. 3 jaws and Pin Jaw and Screw Center. It costs $160. This seems like a good value for a set of jaws.
Any feedback would be appreciated.

Welcome Tony to IAP. [:)] Sorry I can not comment on the apprentice chuck. but one thing you can count on is CSU, I am sure if you were unhappy with the purchase and it did not perform, their service and refund policy is top notch, that comapny aims to please.

Check out the chuck offerings in the PSI catalog. They have made a big push to capture the chuck market with a series of high quality knock-offs of the European ones. Great prices and often come with sets of jaws that are optional (and more $$$) with other brands. They give great service too.

I would almost guarantee that the apprentice chuck from CSUSA is exactly the same chuck as the Barracuda and made in the same Chinese factory with just a different vendor selling it. It sure looks the same in the latest catalog. That said, I would buy from CSUSA if the price was close. I would even be willing to pay a little more since I prefer the service from CSUSA.

Agreed!

Thanks for all your feedback. Sounds like I can't go wrong with CSUSA or PSI. I am going to do a little more research and check out Wooturningz too.

I'll let you know what I decide on. It may be a week or so before I make the purchase.

Tony

Tony - If it is of any help, I did check with Woodturningz on their price for the Barracuda chuck and they were $10 less than the PSI catalog price ($169.95), but still more than the same chuck on Amazon, especially once you add shipping from Woodturningz.

Buy the Barracuda on Amazon - it's the best price you will find on a very good quality import chuck. I have the Nova Midi, and while it is a very nice chuck, the Barracuda is a much better deal with all the jaws that come with it. By all accounts I've read, the quality and precision of this chuck is very good - they must have found a factory with good quality control to build this one....
