My wife and I want to make some chocolates this year..we've been looking around, but most of the molds are made from cheap plastic....

This got me thinking - we see all sorts of pen blank molds made from silicone - could such a thing be used for making chocolates?

What silicone would one use for food safety? I imagine the silicone caulk method would not pass muster...

You might want to give these guys a call or email and they could probably point you in the right direction.

I know my moldmax is pretty benign when it is hardened up, as far as I can tell, but I don't know about the food safety aspect of it.

Andrew I don't think the silicone for insulating would do, bu the material that Charlie and Gadget use should be. if you need the name of a supplier that manufacturer's silicone for molds , PM me I use their compounds for Jewelry casting molds. Bill could give you the straight up on what is food safe.

Andrew,

I would suggest trying something small and easy first to see how it works...

I played with chocolate making in the past. I know that they use the plastic molds because they are easy to thermoform around shapes and get good detail, but I also wonder how the chocolate would react to the silicone from a cooling perspective?

The reason I ask is because chocolate can be kinda finicky with temps and cooling rates and the part that touches the mold is the "pretty part".
